Bob, thanks for the great preliminary thinking. Lew liked that unit a lot, and it was a great price (under 1K, show special). But wanted to wait and get your input. Throughout this build I've bought stuff WAY too early. Emotion took precedence over ration, so trying to pull it back and make informed, logic-based purchasing decisions. Following the lead/input of our buds around here.

That's okay about the little Merc's not being "smart". I have to realize this boat is what it is. It is not an offshore boat. Offshore here means at the very minimum 30 miles out. Our good grouper bite is usually around 40 miles plus off the beach. I'll be using this boat king mac fishing out to say 20 miles on a pretty day, trolling the beach, Southport on the beach in the fall, cruising the fam, going to the beach, etc. My nav requirements will be minimal. My fishfinding requirements minimal as well.

I would like a nice, large flush mount compass up top. A nice sounding stereo. An ICOM VHF. A quality onboard charger. A nice backlit switch panel. And electronics...I like the idea of two units, but I'm worried with all of the gauges for the twins....hope we'll have room.

Strongly consider a twin engine Flowscan... You've used the one on my boat and it gets the engines a little "smarter" to communicate information. One unit covers both engine RPMs, synchronizer, gph for each engine individually and in total, total gallons used, and individual engine hours at the flick of a switch, all in one 3 5/8 hole. Then all we have to worry about is engine temp and water pressure gauges. Mine was installed in '95 with one sensor upgrade in '08 and has worked flawlessly for all these years. Bob can wire it in his sleep. Install the head unit, mount the flow sensors after the fuel filters in your dry boxes; done.

I won't try to second that endorsement but I'll bet you the ranch you'll never regret that advice.
Installed mine in 96, been on two different motor brands and is scary accurate.

SB, those small batt switches are nice, Eugene has them on the Shipokes. Like the convenience of them being mounted where they're accessible.

The batt switch box is nice too.  We used this type of install at PL on the bigger boats.

Thinking about a console layout something like this...



All subject to rearrangement, don't know if the little 2" gauges will be small enough OD wise to be one above the other, but it would be nice.  Plus should you decide to go Flo-Scan, gives ample room, as that is a 4" gauge...

Scott, good to see your plan for rigging, :cheers:  sounds like it's coming together rather nicely...like the way seabob's layout looks, easy to read and great view for nav stuff. :thumright: A gulf coast dunk would be perfect for all your troubles and time in your rebuild :cheers: Let me know if you need anything :salut:

A hold over from my life on inboard singles...

I am assuming that the engines run left handed (CCW).  If so why would you not rig the helm to starboard? (twin binicle right handed of course) Reason being that when you are backing down at the dock you will already be on the side that she will pull to..  I know that you will have infinite control with "the twins" but the walk to the gunnel is that much shorter.

I was a sternman on a Will Frost 29 foot lobster boat that was set up backwards.. Most aggravating thing coming along side, the helm and hauler was to starboard and she had a clockwise gear so everytime you backed down she would pull her stern away from the dock... And somehow it was always my fault for not getting a line over fast enough..... :cyclops:  :drunken:

Bonus points for multi screens too :thumleft:  :thumright: , makes much more sense then one big one, much less clutter!! If they are set up to crossfill/talk then if one gets sick you still have a backup.

Dave, good points. Only thing with me personally, I'm left handed. So I naturally move easier to the left. Like when I dunk, its usually from the left side :wink:

So because of that, like where everything is placed.

Rather than as is typical on I/Bs, O/Bs are CW turning (RH) props.  Ideally, twins will be CR (counter rotators), but not sure the 75 was/is available in a LH gearcase.  Prop torque on RH motors will pull to starboard, which can be offset by the torque tabs on the LUs, however this is more for planning and cruise than it is for manuevering around the docks.  The good thing is, even with the prop torque, which actually wants to turn the motors, hydraulic steering negates that tendency as the motors don't move until you turn the wheel...

Virtually all CCs are set up in this fashion, helm to port, allows two persons to use the leaning post/helm seating comfortably.  Yes, the same could be said for a helm to starboard, but, to be honest, on all the CC boats I've ever built or been aboard or worked on, this is the standard arrangement...obviously, it seems to work well.

A little further on the design (BTW, the red circle on top the dash is your compass).  She will have separate trim/tilt switches, as Scott will be using "traditional" Morse controls, dual lever/dual action (so he'll only need one binnacle, as opposed the the type S controls which are one function per lever), these types of controls don't have the TNT switch in the handle.  I will be locating them very proximate to the binnacle when the levers are at cruise or WOT position.  Allows one to "find" them better, as opposed to them being incorporated into the switch panel or something like that.  As I was saying to Scott this morn, I prefer rockers over toggles for TNT, just an easier action, in my opinion.  Push the button rather than grasp the toggle.  Just my preference...

Since Miss D has an electronics box, I recommend using it for the stereo and the VHF.  While there is more than ample room to install both on the electronics flat on the dash, including to HDS-7s or something like that,  since the box is there, let's use it, rather than it just being a place to throw chit.  Scott has basically 2 options when it comes to tunes.  Either an ACTUAL stereo (I recommend Fushion), or a Lowrance SonicHub (also made by Fushion) teamed up with Sirius radio.  That's his call.  I don't really think he'd like his music loud, so I don't recommend either and Amp or a sub-woofer...although an amp would aid in giving a little extra clarity and punch.  I have (2) 200W amps in the Maxima, I don't listen TOO loud, they just make the music cleaner and more defined.

All this is of course Scott's call, basically at this point food for thought.  Over the next day or 2 I will come up with a real general parts list for Scott, everything from electrical (switches, breakers, wires, cables) to plumbing (pumps, pick-ups, shut-off valves, hoses) to lighting to you name it.  I used to have to do this at PL when we came out with a new model under my responsibility..."specing out a boat".  So sort of, been there done that...

All good word Bob!! :mrgreen:  My Osprey must be an exception cause she is rigged to starboard..  When I trim the engine up high to kill the forward thrust it acts like a water jet with "0 boat speed" and will turn in a slow circle about the pivot point on the boat... VERY good party trick..  The Old Man had twin 75 Stingers on a old Outrage, (the banana hull that only a mother could love) and those were not set up for CW/CCW.. Absolutely no issues other then they would ventilate really easily when running through a rock weed float. They weren't power TNT, that's what I was for :shock:

Note: enjoying a Sam Adams "Wee Heavy mixed with a Winter Lager"  makes it a tad hard to type on an iPad....:mrgreen:  :mrgreen:  :drunken:  :drunken:  #%€$&! Yankee beer! :mrgreen:

Not a derail, but if the Big Boss had said yes to one that I found right before the Osprey, I'd be spending more time on Whaler Central....  I am REALLY glad it worked out the way it did..

A lot of happy hours in Dad's Outrage. The day he said "take your mother ashore" I knew things had changed. Ashore was almost 28 miles dock to dock across Penobscot Bay, and it was in the fog with only a compass and a watch.. I was 15. :shock:

And with the Old Man not on board, Mom says" giveittoher" and boy that boat would skate at 4700 on those 75's (Dad though 3500 was enough)...

Scotty is going to have a great ride with the Mercs!!

It scares me to think how long ago that was..
