So ive been trying to price out my paint costs and even with my wholesale account, Awlgrip is ridiculously expensive. Plus I have little to no painting experience. Anyone use a cheaper 2-part paint? I know Gausebuilt uses some kind of aircraft grade 2-part polyurethane but I'm not sure what it's called. Any Ideas?

I'm not sure if the paint you are referring to is Glasurit, or if perhaps I misspelled it. If you check my post, we just had our boat painted with Glasurit, which marketed its paint in the aircraft industry also. It's marketed in the automobile and marine market; same paint, just cheapest to the car market. If you'd like to see the results, our post is under 1966 Rebuild questions; author Bhard.
Good luck!

Check this out:

I found this company but have never heard of them. Sounds like good quality stuff with a good color palette. Anyone ever heard of this paint company?

Does anyone have a reccomendation for a coating for my aluminum gas tank? It has some corrosion beginning on it and I want some kind of good product made for stopping the rust.

You could coat the tank in POR-15 if the pitting is really bad. Or you could just use some zinc oxide primer meant for the motor on your boat. It comes in yellow and green is is the best corrosion resistance you can get. When thats done paint it with a good quality paint. Another thought might be to put a zinc anode on the tank to reduce the corrosion. I don't know if anyone has done this but it should help with corrosion. You would need to put it in a spot that you can access without removing the panel under the console. Good luck with it. I am doing the same thing to my 170. But my tank is above the sole so I don't have as much corrosion to worry about.

Well after getting various quotes and realizing how much people really want to finish and paint the boat, Ive decided to just man up and do it myself. Plus I realized the deck is definitely getting soft. Which Is a good and bad thing, because now I can lighten the boat up with nida-core, seal in the gas tank like I wanted, and eliminate the stupid channel thing that aquasport used and use large pvc tubing to run my rigging. Any tips as to the easiest way to cut out the deck and glass the new nida core in would be much appreciated. Plan on using 1" thick stuff, was suprised as to how cheap it was.

I don't think you need the 1" thick, the 20mm should be okay. You still need to put a layer of glass on the bottom and 2 layers on the top. If you have a 4 1/2 angle grinder this attachment is really helpful around the edge.

Cut the deck leaving a 2 inch shelf around the outside. Around the control channel cut it out all the way and tab in a double layer of ply to give yourself a shelf to bond to.
Harbor Freight also has a saw that is designed to run up against an edge.

The only problem is it is not adjustable for depth.
bateau2 also sells nidacore panels that are already laminated with roving on top and bottom. A good bit more money but a huge amount of time can be saved. If I lived down there I would go with the prefinished ones because my laminating skills aren't the best and I don't do this stuff enough to warrant setting up a vacuum bag system.

Hmmm that is very tempting. Would make things A LOT easier and quicker. Might be a little tough to fork out that much money though. Has anyone on this forum used these?

My skiff that I had was built by Joel Shine at Bateau.com They do top notch stuff. The folks there are very knowledgeable and will help you out a bunch. I have not used these panels myself, but the skiff had those panels on the floor. I put probably 500 hrs on that boat in two years and it held up great. I would talk to Joel Shine and see what he recommends. Also the forum on Bateau.com is very active with people building and rebuilding boats. You might want to post up on there.

I actually found out today that the local shop where I buy everything (Fiberglass Coatings) can get these panels for me for a little bit cheaper price because of my shop having a commercial account with them. Seems like thats what I will be doing once I go to cut up my floor.
In the meantime, Ive been working on my sandbar/drinking/sunday funday boat
a 72' 11ft whaler that I bought for 200 bucks... Someone dropped it off in front of my friends shop along with a bunch of other junk. Someone tried to drill holes in it to sink it...guess they didnt know that whalers are filled with foam lol. Going to throw my 8hp merc on it and use it to cruise to the sandbar by my house. Will only fit a cooler my dog and my girlfriend, but what else do you need?
Going to practice my painting skills on the whaler and make sure I can tackle the project of spraying the entire aquasport..
