replacement belly fuel tank for 1982 170
« on: January 17, 2022, 06:44:11 AM »
Hello,

I am amidst a refurb of a 1982 170, my first major go at it is replacing the fuel tank and fill/vent lines. I have found the fill/vent line to be foamed down the hull wall, around corner and underneath the deck... my solution is to cut a new access hole just in front of center console to scratch out foam to be able to remove and replace lines... i was hoping to replace the original aluminum tank with a new plastic one. I am unable to find a plastic tank that can fit within my dimensions... mainly its the allowable height from coffin floor to bottom of fill line (which comes through top corner sidewall of coffin). This dimension is 6 3/4" of space, coffin floor to bottom of fill line. Total dimension of allowable space is... 58 1/2" x 20 1/4" x 6 3/4"... I have been referred to Luthers Welding of bristol, RI for construction of a new aluminum tank. However, does anyone know where i may be able to find a plastic tank to fit within these dimensions? the original tanks fill, fuel and vent taps were located directly center of tank, with a fuel level guage to be seen through a deck floor hole just in front of captains chair. Ill post photos, its timing out on me currently during upload.

Thank you, quite a few tank sizes they offer id say... unfortunately the only one that fits in my coffin is 20" shorter on the length i can accept (ID0032-1 model)... its that 6 3/4" height thats killing me... ill get an aluminum one made to fit in the dimensions of the coffin. Thanks again for the list

I would check out Phil at Alloymetalworks.com. He's in the NE.  He was an OEM for Aquasport and has all the drawing/measurements. Just have to tell him the year and model.

When I replaced my ‘76 170 fuel tank about 4 years ago there were no plastic tanks being sold with those dimensions.  Had one fabricated aluminum.  Cost me $390 and included sender.

So I’ve got the same boat and have approached the same project the last 3 years and couldn’t find a tank and hate the idea of dropping anything metal below decks in NE. Below is the closest I’ve found: but it’s a half inch or two too tall by your measurements ….and they’re out of stock everywhere and have been for a couple of years….

Keep us posted if you figure anything out.

Try to be on a boat everyday.

The height on this ^^^ 7.25” not including the 2.5” additional height for the inlet hose fitting.  So yeah, 10.75” not close to the 6” spec height.  Don’t y’all up north winterize the boat, which I assume includes emptying the tank?  If so, what’s the concern with having AL tank?  I’m not at all familiar with living in cold winter states.

getting a custom built aluminum tank is my best bet, i received a quote from Luthers Welding of Bristol, RI. They can max out my coffin size and fit a 32 gallon tank with a fuel sender ready to go. construction complete in 3 weeks.
