hey guys,
This past Saturday I just installed a new/used trim and tilt
on my Johnson(j140tlco) after installation I jumped the trim and tilt motor
to make sure everything was working, and it's working fine.

I hooked up the blue and green wires and went to the throttle
wear the switch is located, and tried it there. Not working...I could
hear the relays clicking but no action up or down. I tested the wires from
the throttle to the motor and got 12.7 v on one and 12.5 v on the other. I suspect it's the relays themselves. Just wondering if the
electronic guys agree. As I'm not to swift with electronics. I pulled one of the relays off and it's a bosch 5 tang or pin. Could
I get this part at like a napa store? or do I need to go a marine store for these parts?

Both relays not working is strange. They worked when u jumped them so the relays are working, correct? Put 12volts to the trim and tilt wires where it connects to the switch and see if it moves. Does your switch have 2 or 3 wires? Could be the wires or switch....the relays u are asking about can be bought at an auto store....bring the old one...

yes theses relays are standard //// :tme: look to make Shure you did the ground correct

I actually jumped the trim and tilt motor it's self before hooking up
the blue and green wires. I've owned the boat for three years and
no tellin how long the previous owner let this problem go. the trim
and tilt has not worked since I bought the boat. got a good deal on a
used trim and tilt and installed it Saturday. all I see there is two wires
one blue and one green.

yes theses relays are standard //// :tme: look to make Shure you did the ground correct

o.k. like I said just a blue and green wire.
that was it, ground? isn't that in the relays
when you go up or down doesn't it turn a wire to
ground? I'm just guessing, but there was no ground
wire there. did I hook it up wrong?

Put in relay and got nothing not even a click.
Put the old relay in and it started clicking again.
I think the problem might be in the switch on the throttle
Handle. I don't know. What do you guys think?

Is there a switch on the side of the motor?
If you suspect it is in the control you can take the switch apart up there and clean it.

Is there a switch on the side of the motor?
If you suspect it is in the control you can take the switch apart up there and clean it.

no switch on the side of the
motor. I don't know what else it
could be. I'll have to check
the switch at the throttle. o.k. now,
what's the easiest way to take the apart up there?

Let me get this clear.  You have a two wire motor, and the relay works by swapping positive to negative to run the motor in one direction or another.  You tested the motor before connecting to the relay by hooking it directly to a 12 volt source.  The motor runs.  When you connect the motor to the relay, the motor will not run, but you do hear a click from the relay when you operate the trim switch on the throttle.  You swapped relays and no click.

Are you getting enough voltage to the relay?  Have you run the battery down during installation and testing?  Are all the grounds at the junction box good?  If the relay is clicking, it's obvious that the switch on the throttle is working so I'd guess the problem must be low voltage to the system, a bad ground or connection at the relay or a bad and or wrong relay.  Also, if you have the outboard trimmed all the way up, it may be locking up the trim motor.  Try using the manual release to lower the motor and see if that frees things up.

The one in my Yamaha control did this - I got it replaced and everything was fine again but another member posted how to clean it and he did this to repair the same symptoms on his Yamaha control - I could have saved over a hundred $ just cleaning mine.  Try it - maybe look on Youtube for how to disassemble it?

hello jack hart,
I used to live in inglis right across from the vfw on 40.
correct, on the first paragraph. the batterys are fully charged. have NOT checked all the grounds yet. the motor is in the lowered position.
checked all connections for tightness they're all tight. maybe I should just go buy some of these bosch relays and start from there.

I'm going to try to clean the switch on the throttle first. will see what happens.

Well, it's been a year but I finally got the trim and tilt working
properly. It was the switch on the binnacle. Installed a new switch
On the dash next to the binnacle ran the new wires through the relay
On the motor, heck I even ordered a new trim and tilt motor for $150.00
Installed everything. It all is working excellent.
Mama is happy...that makes me happy also.
