Fuel Tank Dimensions

Mod Edit: Members often ask for tank dimensions when contemplating an install of a new fuel tank either during a rebuild or for a replacement of a failed tank. There is another thread in this Resource forum dealing with tank capacity. This one will be for actual shape dimensions. Please feel free to add to this database either by actual measurement or fabricator cut sheet when installing a new tank.
Thanks everyone.
this is moellers tank diagram for the '04 200 osprey, the dimensions match the tank in my '96 200 osprey, which is a 50 gallon tank...

Mod Edit: Please note this information is for a rectangular tank mounted in a 1979 19-6. The member replaced an above deck tank that the PO was using and mounted his new tank in the factory coffin below deck. He took measurements of the tank coffin and had the tank built to fit allowing maximum size.
helllo all,
i drove to Bristol RI today to pick up my new tank. I have to give Luthers welding an honorable mention. the tank was exact on all specs, on-time, clean, made to order. I am very happy.
I test fitted it into the coffin with the lid on and its a perfect fit.
ultimately i got a 43 gallon tank
1 1/2 OD fill'
5/8 OD vent
Ground tab
the dimensions are 63 3/4 by 21 1/2 by 7 1/2.

Mod Edit: 1975 19-6.
Please note that member altered the stock dimensions to fit his needs. Any tank fabricator should be able to do the same.
Okay, I got the dimensions of the Tank, Fill, Vent, Sender and Pickup. I hope it makes sense.
Since Im getting a new tank should I have them make the Vent, Fill and Ground with the same
B
measurements(see below) instead of the current configurations? Or leave as is?
Let me know if you need anything else
Got the drawing from RDS website, then filled in my measurements.

Here is the one I had built for my 1985 170. It's made of 1/8" marine aluminum plate, the coal tar epoxy coated.
L = 57.5"
W = 20.25"
H =6.125"
Hope this helps.

The tank is 64 L x 21.5 W x 8 H. The fill, vent, & fuel locations are side by side about 30" from the front and the electric sender is about 16" from the aft end.

I have an autocad drawing of the tank on my office computer. If I recall correctly it is 72" long, about 20" wide and about 11" tall and holds 75 gallons. They call it a 72 or 73 gallon tank since your not supposed to fill it all the way.

This link is for Moeller poly tanks in various capacities. This are listed as OEM and there is a good chance that if your newer model Aqua has a poly tank, it will be one of these. Careful measurement of your existing fuel "coffin" will allow you to choose the tank that fits best.

Mod Edit: 1966 Flatback Diver model hull. This is a custom built tank for below deck installation. Dimensions are approximate but are posted here as guidelines to custom rebuild tank install.
I have your exact hull, and fit 63 gallons under the deck. How far apart are you putting your stringers? As I recall (these are only from memory, I can look up actual dimensions) my tank was something like 60" long by 30 or 32" wide by 7" deep. I had them put a VERY slight vee in my tank. The builder advised it would allow the pickup to access more fuel than a completely flat tank. I think the middle is 1" deeper than the sides... resulting in less unusable volume.

I just today found my file which gave considerable detail about when I replaced Aquasport's factory fuel tank in my own 17 ft, 1988 year model Aquasport "Osprey". Since there will be others who will have this same question in the future I'm providing some information here about the original fuel tank.
The original factory fuel tant was retangular in shape. The exact dimensions of the factory tank I removed from my 17 ft Aquasport was: 56.0" long x 20.0" wide x 6.0" deep. It's fuel capacity was the factory 27 gallons.
Generally, the tank's "fittings" were clustered around an area that was approximately 10 inches from the port side edge of the tank, and 27 inches from the aft (rear) edge of the tank and were on the top surface of the tank.
More specifically, these are the measurements I took from that original factory tank. (SEE BELOW)
ITEM -- DISTANCE FROM AFT TANK EDGE /// DISTANCE FROM STARBOARD SIDE TANK EDGE
fuel gage
sending unit -- 16 inches /// 10 inches
fuel pickup -- 25 inches /// 11.5 inches
grounding tab -- 27.5 inches /// 10 inches
tank fill tube -- 28 inches /// 8.5 inches
tank vent tube -- 28.5 inches /// 11.5 inches
All of the above measurements are to "centerline" of the fitting.
NOTE: to calculate the fuel capacity of tank (in gallons) use this formula: (all numbers are inches)
"Length x Width x Depth = X inches, then divided by 231"
Example: 56x20x6 = 6720 divided by 231 = 29 gallons

Re: Building A New Fuel Tank
Just a suggestion here for anyone considering having a new fuel tank
made for their Aquasport. There are many formulations of aluminum
sheet metal, known as "alloys".
The Aluminum Alloy that is specifically formulated for marine use,
which IS CORROSION RESISTANT is known as "5086". I have a fuel
tank that was made of 1/8" thick "5086" in 1999 and today (2013)
it still looks just like new. There is no corrosion of the surface at all.
Attached below is a recent photo of my 14+ year old "5086" tank, as
seen through my clear 'pie plate' access hole.
So if you're considering having someone make a tank for you I suggest
that you ask them to give you a price for making the tank of "5086"
sheet aluminum.
Go to "Wikipaedia", type in "Aluminum Alloy" and then scroll down to
and click on "5086" and you can read about its formulation and marine
applications.
