Broken links
« on: September 30, 2015, 11:26:23 AM »
I'm having an issue that seems to have been touched on in a Feb '15 thread, but I'm not sure of the fix. Being new to the site, it seems apparent that a migration was done at some point in the recent past. Many of the older posts I'm searching through refer to threads with discussions related to the conversation, but many of the links are broken.
This is the message: We have switched to new forum software - SMF! Please visit the homepage (classicaquasport.com) to be redirected! The old forum is now closed.

I'm not sure how to find those threads via the homepage?

Here's an example - the link shown in this reply is broken:
http://classicaquasport.com/smf/index.php?topic=12386.msg124972#msg124972

Thanks in advance,
Paul

Yes Paul, when the Forum was switched over to a different software, any links within the Forum itself were broken.
Links outside the Forum may or may not work but this is not due to the software hosting change but to the actual link itself being broken by the original poster. An example of that would be a Craigs List or eBay ad or a link to photos hosted on a third party site.

That stated, with over 100k posts on this Forum, a fair number of links reference past threads and as such, pose a lot of additional work to correct. Since the change over earlier this year, Rick and I have spent a good deal of time fixing broken links because we still have access to the old site. IMHO it will take years to find and then correct them all (you will find I corrected the broken link you posted above). I continue to fix links as I find them as I work through the different forums and move threads around to better catalog topics.

While I could apologize for the inconvenience of the situation, nobody on this Forum is more aggravated by this than me because of the additional workload in maintenance it created. Still, this inconvenience is offset by the more robust system and is an acceptable trade off.

The best thing members can do to "help out" is when they come across a broken link while searching (like you did) is to post it here. I will then correct that link and review the thread for any additional links that need fixin'.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply, Bob - no worries (apologies needed) this really is a great site. I came across a handful of them in the Osprey 22-2 rebuild forum last night, and in the fuel/fuel lines forum researching the replacement of fuel/vent lines.
Happy to help out by bringing them up as I run across them.

Should they just be added as new posts in this thread?

Paul

Paul (and all members),

The easiest way is just what you did.
Just create a post in this thread and list the links. No reference needed, the broken link will get me to the thread and I can do (99%) the fix. It is the exception rather than the rule that I can't repair. Again, some links to outside sources may no longer exist but sometimes (with the info in the post) I can create an updated link. Photos not linked to the Forum Gallery are a crap shoot and often are lost due to the original owner removing them from the third party host. That can be frustrating, especially with rebuilds.

If you have others, please post and I'll start working. That way you can get back on track with your search.
Remember, all the threads and their accompanying posts are still here. It's just a matter of finding them. It's the one thing I'm somewhat good at on this Forum.

Thanks and good luck. :thumright:

Fixed. :det1:

Paul the first link (contained two in one post) was a generic link to a search thread. That type link cannot be repaired so I removed it from my post.

The rest are now working.

Keep em' coming. :salut:

I'm only looking in a few applicable (to me) forums right now... if I go wandering off I'll end up envying some kind of setup that will cost me a lot of $$ to replicate

Here's a couple more:

You should be good to go.

When you find them, post them and I'll fix.

Thanks and good luck. :thumright:
