Yamaha Wiring, a few questions. 1997 115 v4

a few things here.

There is a dark blue and a yellow feed off the harness for the instrument lights, according to the yamaha color codes, the yellow is the ground?

Everything is hooked up on the guage which has the fuel level, accept 2 black wires, and one white. Is the white to be connected to the positive terminal for the fuel tank sender? Standard marie wiring codes suggest I would be looking for a pink wire, but that's not the case here.

Finally, there is a 14 ga red wire coming from the main ignition switch. I'm assuming this is the system main hot?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kinda apples to oranges but...

My 91 digital has a white with blue tracer (I'll double check when I get home) that hooked to the fuel sender.

Rick replaced his original with the newer model and he stated his was solid white.

The blue is a power feed to the lights and yellow is the ground. The white wire on the Yamaha gauge connects to the pink fuel sender wire. The black wire from the sender goes to ground. The red off the ignition switch powers the gauges except for the fuel gauge which only gets a blue wire for lighting, a black wire for ground, and the sender wire. The sender wire from the tank should be pink and it connects to the gauges white wire.

Hey guys, thank you very much for the help.

So the two black wires coming out of the gauge with the fuel level, they both get grounded? I currently have 2 grounds coming off my tank, one to the tank itself, and one that grounds to the sender itself. I'm assuming these 2 black wires are there for that purpose? I'm using regular Red wire from the sender........in hein sight that was likely a very bad idea. I will make sure to label this....a lot.

Should the 14 ga run from the ignition switch to the hot bus be fused? I noticed that there were inline fuses from the switch to the gauges.

Kraw,
Have to disagree here.  Blue is indeed 12V+ gauge lighting, yellow is ignition power.  Black on Yams is ground.  Red is constant hot from the engine harness (switched off when the batt switch is off).

Yellow on Yams is the same as purple on either Merc or OMC...

For gauge lighting to be operated off the nav light switch, simply take the blue wires coming off each gauge, combine them, then run them to the nav light switch.  You don't have to do anyting with the grounds, they are already tied into ground via the engine harness.

Now, for you fuel tank sender, simply run the pink from the sender to white off the gauge, and the ground to a ground bus.  Simple as that.

Keep in mind, the only thing your engine's electrical system and your boat's electrical system have in common is ground.  So you can ground a boat appliance to an engine side ground, or an engine "part" to a boat side ground, they'll both be fine...

Bob, the red wire from the ignition switch is thicker (14 ga) than the rest. They all connect via deutcshe connectors to their corresponding colored wire. However the red wire it connects to is thinner (16 ga). The connector is one that allows more than one wire. I was thinking this is where the house powers the system? I'm guessing most everything is fed by the engine harness? I have to take pictures I guess.

If you leave the harnessing mess coming off your gauges alone, the gauge lights will come on any time the key is in the acc or run position.  Who needs their gauge lights on during the day?  That's why we take the blue wire out of the engine loop and run it o the nav light circuit, so they only come on when the nav lights are on.  The yellow wire?  Don't need to do a damn thing about it.

But I would like to see a pic of the red wire coming off the ignition switch.  That switch does not sound like a factory Yam switch.  And BTW, according to maxrules...http://www.maxrules.com/fixyamahawiring.html

Note Yellow...not a ground...

I saw that color code, that's why I was confused. Your explanation makes sense. I'll just jump the blues to the hot running to the compass light.

That works fine, Christian.  But I'd still like to see the wiring coming off the ign switch... :shock:
