Hello everyone, found this forum while I was mucking through the net and I am glad I did. Seems that my Yamaha 250 is on it's last leg and I am looking to replace her. I am looking at the Yamaha either 250 or 225 as I can save about five grand if I opt for the 225. So here is my question what will I lose if I go that route?

My first thought is you're gonna hate a 225hp on that boat,my 225 explorer has a 200 and it's ok but when i re power it's going to be a 250 or 300hp,if your buying new i would shop around, and look at them all, there are deals to be had and all outboards, regardless of brand these days seem to be pretty solid, just my .02.
Good luck on the search

Agree with circle. The 250 is the way to repower if you're on a budget, a single 300 would be the way to go...
On 250 Explorer/Ospreys, our most common was twin 150s...

Thanks guys I appreciate the info. I was thinking I would be a little disappointed with the 225 but I thought I would ask anyway.

McRae,
Interesting you are showing a $5K difference on the price between a 225 and a 250. At Proline, our cost difference on, say, a 225 Etec and 250 Etec is $700...

The 225 was a 2009, where as the 250 was 2010. That could be part of the difference.

Hours and the year, I understand. But $5K? That's a chunk, unless the 225 was over 300 hours and the 250 was new...

Not only is that a chunk but Yamaha quit using model years several years ago.

A friend of mine was recently shopping for a pair of 130 Etecs. I think there was like a 4k spread between the various dealers around from Bradenton to Tarpon Springs.

Sounds like new models and leftovers...
They can say all they want about "model year"...the prices go up, regardless...

Sorry I should of been clear on the differences. The 225 they bought in 2009 it requires no gage changes because it is compatible with mine that i have. The 250 in that series can not be shipped in until August so I would have to go with one that requires me to replace the gages so there was some cost differences in that. I have called around and found it a bit cheaper so I am going with them.
