« on: February 05, 2009, 09:19:11 PM »
Hello:
just got into a partnership on this boat {3 of us} it's my 1st boat and I'm excited about it !

The boats deck was redone a few years ago and is solid. We'll need to replace the teak {maybe with plasteak ?}
Boat came on a trailer that has those rollers, and the motor we knew needed to be redone as it was run 12 minutes without the oil injector hose in place by the guy who sold it to us.

The Motor is a 1999 Merc 200 HP 2.5L 2-stroke B/W series XL. the motor starts and runs but knocks ?
We found a place online in NC {EastCoast Outboards} anyone ever dealt with them ?
they are picking up the motor this evening from us in NY,and hauling it back to their shop in NC for $300.00
then the complete upper/lower rebuild is $3300. with a 5 year warranty. 1st 3 years 100%,4th year 75%,5th year 50%.
seems like a great deal as the few places I found in NY were around 6k.
I sure hope I picked a good rebuilder !
One last thig on the Motor,were thinking about having the oil injection disabled and mixing our own oil in so this doesn't happen again ? {thoughts !!}
we also want to get the bottom of the boat redone !, were just not sure what to do ? I'd like to get it done as the motor is being worked on,but I have no idea how much this could cost ? or even whats the best method/product to use ?

This is a saltwater boat and will be used mostly in the Long Island Sound,and trailored out to Montauk a few times a year !

I'm planning to get those Seamaster LED lightstrips under the gunnels clear/blue to get a soft glow on the back of the boat at night {just not sure how bright they are ?}
Also ,were looking into getting 2 NEW  bunk mattress's ,not sure where to get them ??

lots of plans for this boat and were excited about it !

Wish us luck !!

The warrantee should cover the oil injection too - I would leave it on.  I have one boat that I premix and one that I don't and I think it's much easier (and probably better for the motor) to dump oil into a holding tank and let the motor draw and mix as it needs it rather than run at 50:1 mix all the time.  My $0.02

I would pay someone to do it for you since it's a 3-way split - find someone (marine) that does sand blasting or some other kind of blasting and let them have all the fun.  Then pay them to repaint it too.  You'll have it back in a couple days and you won't know the fun you missed. :wink:   I think I paid about $300 on my 230 (had other stuff done at the same time so I don't remember the breakdown).  Have them re-paint with an ablative paint since you said it'll live on the trailer. Again, my $0.02.

Will need to get them made locally.

Welcome aboard!

NJ craigs list has a soda blaster advertising on it. He shouyld be able to give you a price per foot. Consider a multi-season ablative paint like Micron. I got 5 seasons from mine. Also wears off so you get much less paint build up as time goes by.

There are pros and cons to oil injection. I think the pros outway the cons especially on new than 1990 motors. The mfg's had the bugs worked out by then. My 1988 Johnson had the original VRO pump on it and worked fine. Motor was just worn out and was replaced. Unfortunately the oil injection units get blamed for motor failures when the fault was lack of maintainance, no oil, or oil tank contamination.

Good luck with the project!

If the boat is going to stay in the water I'd ask a marina or someone in the know if there is a better paint than the ablative type.  The ablative is designed to wear off as you cruise (I can see it washing off as I'm cleaning the boat) - don't know how it will act stationary for long times, I assume ok but ask someone.

They ask that, I think, as if you're going to use a "Shoot thru the hull" transducer.  You can also use a transom mount.
A combo FF/GPS is a nice device and you'll get pros and cons of both when you ask someone.  I like them because they take up less valuable console space. You can get ones that have internal GPS antennas or external ones. I have the external type.  You may be able to save some money by looking for discontinued models at boaters world or west marine. I think I saved $400 buying a discontinued model.
Someone will have to pipe in on the Lowrance brand - I have Garmin.

RickK :

Thanks for all of the advice !!
I found a painter very close toi the boat that uses very inexpensive help.
he's currently in FL on vacation,and said to call him at the end of the month.he said roughly around $325.00 and mentioned using a primer,then a red under paint ? ,Then a color of my choice {Blue} and said he would use Micron ????

does this sound like a good paint job ??

also :
Theres 3 of us involved,so I've been looking at 1 of the latest Lowrance units {HDS-7}
this new line looks great !!

I've been looking at replacing the teak on the boat,that PlasTeak stuff looks fantastic !{I just got a sample from them}
they make pulpits out of the stuff and sell powerwinch windlasses to mount on the pulpits ! {looks fantastic}
I want to do the door to the cabin,as well as the side-gunnel caps.

has anyone used this stuff ?

thanks again,
Bill

I think they can put a sealer on, and then the different color paint is for showing when the ablative is wearing thin. So, sounds about right.

I was interested in the PlasTeak stuff also until I saw some boats at the boat show that had there deck/swim platform covered with PlasTeak, was very disappointed, looks good on pictures but not so in real, looked fake to me, there's no variation in color or grain unlike real teak. So, before you invest the $$ in that stuff go take a look at boats with PlasTeak on, maybe you'll like it

have another question I could use an answer for !

How would we replace the below deck gas tank ?, my buddies wanted to just 2 plastic tanks on the deck in the back of the boat ?
I wanted to have the gas tank below the deck but don't know how to do it. there has to be a way to swap out that tank for a new one {I would think ?}

Billfish,
Your hull is solid glass, so you can use a shoot-thru-the-hull ducer.  I would go with Garmin, to be honest with you.  We do a lot of Suzuki and Etec installs, their gauges are made by Lowrrance, and there have been a lot of issues with them.

As far as a replacement tank, you will have to cut a "hatch" in the cockpit sole to remove the old one.  Contact Wellcraft CS to get the builder who fabbed the tank to get another to the same dimensions.  (941) 753-7811.  They will direct your call to Four Winns CS (that's where some Wellcrafts are being built now), and explain what you need.  Once you get a new tank, take the section you cut out and turn it into a hatch.

Sounds easy, doesn't it? :lol:

seabob4:

we have a hatch now {a sort of big one} we pulled it up today to take a look as we finally had a warm day.
the tank has to be there as I seen the old fuel hose,but it looked like there was something covering the tank ?
is there any cutting involved {below the hatch ?}

we feel it's a good time to also change to an automatic bilge as well while were down there !

thanks,
Bill
