77 22.2 cosmetic restoration

Well I have done it, bought a great 77 22.2 with a solid floor and transom. The son and I am rebuilding her so he can fish offshore in more than a flatsboat! Replacing the tank, console and adding a sweat baitwell I scored on EBAY! Once he graduates highschool, she's going to Hammerhead for a real restoration and tower. Congrats!  Honestly, you may not need to send her to Hammerhead if you guys have a solid boat and accomplish what you are proposing.

Well were getting under way, we have put the first coat of Fighting Lady Yellow Awlgrip on the console and baitwell. Patching of the holes on the exterior of the hull is almost complete and then we'll prime her up. Were going Awlgrip on the outside and Imron on the cap and deck. So far so good, although as much as the previous owner(s) had mounted on the transom, she looks like she got in a machine gun fight! CR

Just curious - why Imron inside and Awlgrip outside?  I did the exact opposite  - because (in my logic) I figured there was a good chance of dinging the outside more so than the inside...

As the story goes, my neighbor retored a Behive and loved the Imron inside. I had previously restored a 17 Mako and used Signature paint on the outside. So when I ordered paint, I got the Imron per his advise on the inside and asked for Signature for the outside. The paint supplier didn't sell signature and recommended Awlgrip for the outside and there you have it. No science, just recommendations. We'll see how it goes! By the way, your boat is awesome lil richard, in three years when my son goes to college, I'll be doing a complete restoration. Only hope it turns out as well as yours! CR

All of this stuff is subjective - that is why I was curious to your thoughts on it.  One could argue the inside is more prone to dings too...

Bottom line is Awlgrip and Imron are both great products - although I am still not sure if one is better than the other.

 Today we are gettimg into more color. Seccond and final coat of Awlgrip on the console and baitwell. Fisrt coat of fighting lady yellow on the hull and transom. Looking Good! CR

Two questions:

1) Are you rolling tipping, or spraying?

2) That is a hammerhead console, right?

I got the console from Marine Parts Outlet in Ft. Pierce, they had quite a few that had blemishes from the factory. May have come from Hammerhead, but I don't know. Still had to pay $400.00 for the thing. Baitwell is a 45 gallon Offshore Marine Products I got on Ebay for $308.00 used. Plumbed like the Hammerhead but about $1100.00 retail. We are roll and tipping the paint as it is something we can handle and I don't want to mess with a spray booth set up. More photos to follow this week! CR

Its a thing people who spray their boat use to control dust and such from getting in the paint and also to control over spray on the neighbors vehicles and the like. Most often used by professionals, the leading reason none of us on this site use them. CR [/b]
