Livewell/washdown installation thoughts
« on: May 19, 2014, 09:56:31 PM »
Mod Edit:
Started new post concerning 1996 225 EX.

Hi Seabob4, can we talk more about how a washdown/livewell pump should be hooked up ? I'm just about done tying up all my electrical fixes, one of them was replacing the washdown pump. I was thinking boy I hope these hoses don't come off the barbs.... I think there is a how that comes from the thru hull connection to the pump, out the pump up to a large valce, near the top of the stern. It might have a closed position but also switches from washdown or livewell. Supposedly if the pump is off the valve is closed. So I think the only worry would be the connection down to the pickup, I think it's just a hose, should there be a shut off valve there ? Even that there would still be some amount of hose to the water pickup thru the hull correct?

Also, when you mentioned overlooking the hoses, how do you determine if they should be replaced ? I don't know how old these hoses are, plenty greasy so I'm guessing they've been there awhile.

Well, since this post is "addressed" to me, I'll take a stab at it.

First, all your hosing is most likely original.  None of it is going to "come off" the various barbs unless you want it to.  In fact, if you were to try, you'd probably find you have to cut the hoses off, as they take a "set" on the barbs, sometimes even a heat gun doesn't work.  Anyway, your main concern for safety's sake is the barb on the pickup.  If you stick your head in the starboard side access door and look down and to the right, you'll see the pickup...and the shut-off valve on top of it.  However, reaching it to turn it off (should the need arise) could be problematic, as it's a long way down there.  Give it a try.  If you can't reach it, I recommend cutting an access hole (pie) in the aft wall of the fishbox.  Doing this will also allow you to service your bilge pump and float switch...

I found the ball valve on the pickup, as I was able to reach it and close it. Not sure how quickly I could do that in a panic though so I'll look into your suggestion.

Thanks again....
