Install a second station steering and throttles
« on: October 15, 2013, 08:32:39 PM »
I am sure this has been asked here before, I just do not do well searching for threads.
I am thinking about installing a second station, steering and throttles on a cobia style tower this winter.
I have Hydraulic steering, Seastar and I would need a second binnacle.
Give me some opinions and ideas.
Much thanks as always

Bryan

Matt is most likely using single action Morse type S controls...1 twin lever binnacle per motor.  Separate shift and throttle.  Easy install, cabled in series or parallel, Fernando uses the same on his 19-6 with a fold down upper, his are REALLY smooth (I've driven his boat).  Been the dual station setup for like ever.  Only problem is with twins you need the real estate to install that second binnacle.

On the 245 dual station we did like the one I showed, we had the binnacles set up side by side, throttles inboard next to the wheel.  The problem with THAT boat, using a series cabled install, was shifting from the upper station was nearly, if not, impossible.  Too many degrees of cable bend.  Even using 33C Supremes, we were over 700* of bend, whereas Morse recommends no more than 360*.  Nando's upper folds in a completely different way than ours did at AS, so he suffers none of that massive cable bend chit that we did.

No worries.
One of the things I like best about this site.
It goes off track a bit but always comes around.
In most cases, it is just more and better information.

I think newer style shift cables are much more flexible than in the past and might help with previous binding issues
Seabob is right on the controls I have the two lever morse and a fold down tower
They are crazy smooth with an easy to adjust tension control screw
With twin motors they would take up lots of room
The morse controls are simple and seem bulletproof

I think I have found a nice removable tower.
I am thinking about adding a second station on her, but maybe just a tower for viewing.
I will see how the twin outboard install goes.

Tx, I am working on developing a dual station unit for dual action binnacles...time will tell if it will work or not.

It pretty much comes down to my experience with single action binnacles and the units I just bought, which I am not too impressed with. I need to talk to my machinist at work and I'll post back once I make some headway on it, I'll post back here even if it doesn't work out. However, if it does work it will have no added resistance and  be cheaper and less complex than going with the current available products.

After all, necessity is the mother of something or other...Right?
