Dual Station rigging question

Can the Teleflex MT3 single lever, dual action control be rigged for dual station?

This one.


I searched around and found the connection kits for dual stations, but I'm still not sure if it applies to this particular control or not.

Well it appears that it can.

This was under the picture you posted from the Teleflex site.

Features

• Dual action (throttle and shift in one lever)
• Sturdy control provides one-handed positive engine control
• Neutral warm-up is done by pulling out the hand levers in the neutral position
• Built-in friction drag helps reduce slippage and throttle creep while underway
• Includes hardware for 3300/33C control cables

But....

The DS unit states use for inboards

My answer would be no.  The single lever will not work in a dual station application due to the neutral detent.

I agree with Nando, and had a similar situation many years ago where an owner wanted to do dual station with OMC controls (same concept, single lever dual action).  The shift action was fine, but neither lever would go into the throttle phase of motion without "helping" it along by moving the other lever as well, just to get it into the throttle portion of travel.  Ended up going back to what works, Morse "S" model single lever/single action controls...

Yamaha has their dual-station kit, which basically turns the mechanical motion into electrical motion in the transfer boxes, using actuators in a similar fashion as Teleflex electronic controls.  All very pricey...

The single lever/dual function controls do not work well for dual station outboard applications, even with the dual station transfer slides. The single lever controls lack sufficient throw to engage the shift arms on outboards from the top station. Dual lever/single function controls with the dual station transfer slides work really well for dual station applications, and are generally the most bulletproof and cost effective way of rigging upper station controls.

A couple of tips that you may find helpful when you rig your second station:

1) Use the 33c Extreme cables or equivalent, as you will likely have to create a big sweeping loop to get the lower station cables in to the transfer boxes. The cable friction will be higher than single station applications, so use the best cables you can find;

2) Only use the detent kit for the Morse binnacle on the bottom, as dual detent kits make it difficult to shift in/out of neutral. You will have to buy the detent kit separately, but all the hardware to rig is included with binnacles. This is not always clear in the catalogs;

3) If you are going Seastar, make sure to utilize a 2.0 cfm helm rather than the more common 1.7. Additionally, do not forget the balancer hose between helms. We have seen 2 boats rigged without the balancer hose on dual helms, and this is downright dangerous;

4) If your tower folds, make sure to allow sufficient slack in the cables and hydraulic hoses to prevent kinking when folded. This will greatly enhance cable and hose life;

5) When it comes time to bleed the steering, find someone with a Power Purge to bleed the system for you. Most local shops will have one. In dual station applications, the Power Purge does a far superior job to manual bleeding and provide much better steering.

Dang man! that's double bad news, but good at the same time. :D

I'm glad I didn't pull the trigger on the cables and controls yet :!:

As far as the steering goes... I just bought a Sea Star kit with the 1.7 helm (pretty good price though). So, I guess I'll be looking for a good deal on the 2.0. x2.

The dual station gig with an outboard and hydraulic steering is a new adventure to me, so I'll be leaning on you guys as I go. Fortunately it with be several months before I'm at that stage of the game. Time for the structural work has been at a premium all winter so far, but the money is in the bank so I have been trying to get the back end stuff now.

We know a Teleflex authorized rebuild facility that can rebuild your 1.7 into a 2.0 if you need. I will be far cheaper than buying a new 2.0.

I'm not trying to play both sides of the fence on the steering thing, but I think I need to slow down and gather some more info.
