Another Yamaha corrosion casualty

Looks like it is time for a new kicker motor.
Got a 2001 Yamy high thrust 9.9 4 stroke
Was getting the boat ready today for start of our winter Chinook season'
Noticed some strange deposits on the outside of the mid section..weren't there a month ago when I fogged  it.
Yep ,you guessed it, mid section ate through from the inside of exhaust chamber.
Motor has 1600 hours on it, runs like a top, always stored inside, never spent more than 5 days in the water at one time, flushed  and washed with Saltaway after every use.
It wouldn't bother me so much if it hadn't happened to me before. Bought a new Yamy kicker in 1991, same issue 3 years later, mid section rotted out.
This is my 3rd Yamaha kicker in 21 years.
I guess I should be happy...it ain't a $20,000 V6  :roll:

I was thinking the corrosion problem was with all Japanese brands  :scratch:  
Don't see  any Nissan/ Tohatsu over here. Know nothing about em.

I got the Nissan 9.9 outboard
Its about 10 years old
Never had a problem
Bought down here in Newport Beach
I use it for my Inflatable

I love it!
Probably wont marry it though :lol:

$20,000 for a V6?  I'd be glad to sell you your next V6 outboard, save you some money as well.

Have been noticing for about the last year motor shows a oily residue coming out of the weep hole on the midsection. Makes me think that the corrosion might have gotten to the bottom of the power head. Anyone ran across this before ?

might as well pull the thing apart and see!  Maybe you find a deal on one with a blown powerhead.

No more additional projects for me this winter  
I promised  Brent he would be driving his goat by next June......only a year behind schedule :roll:

Pulled boat out last week to fire up both engines...been a couple months without running them.
Looks like the corrosion issue on the kicker has gotten to the oil pan.
Have engine oil dripping out in front of the prop.


I just happen to have another kicker 2 years older than this one that I had removed from the boat by backing into a pile of logs  :oops:
The insurance company totaled this engine and I bought it back for a 50$ salvage fee. It appears the parts I would need to repair the engine on my boat are still good on this motor.
The totaled engine probably only has 50 hours on it, hasn't been run since the mishap back in 2000.
The engine on my boat has 1700 hours on it.
Thinking about maybe trying to fire up this engine this weekend, I am pretty sure I had run all the fuel out of it before the little mishap, I used to disconnect the fuel line when I flushed it and let it run until it ran out of fuel.
Any advise on what to do prior to trying to start it.
I am trying to decide which motor to repair, or even if I want to attempt it my self.
Too many projects and not near enough time :lol:

I'd pull the plugs on the one that has been sitting and squirt some oil in the cylinders.  With the plugs still out turn the kill switch off and pull her through a few times by hand.  If everything feels nice and smooth..  put the plugs back in, add some fuel and fire her up.  Then I'd put the two motors side by side and start swapping parts.  That shouldn't take very long at all to do.

Pulled apart the motor thats been in the box since 2000 last week end, thing is like brand new. Never tried starting it but you can turn the flywheel with no problem. The upper casing..exhaust...is good and also the oil pan.
My plan is to use the power head, upper casing, oil pan off of this engine.
Will use the lower unit, tilt assemble, handle,steering pivot tube, and carb off of the 2000.
Hoping my plan will work. Checked part #s for both years, they are the same.
Ordered a new water pump and various gaskets and seals for the swap over.
Never done this sort of thing before so wish me luck ...I am quessing the 2000 isn't going to come apart as easy as the 97 did.
I figure I got nothing to lose, neither engine is worth much the way they are. If it works out at least I will have a motor I can sell.
Would really like to get a new one with the power tilt, I ain't getting any younger. :lol:
