Rub Rail Cleaning
«

I've got a 1978 22 Family Fisherman with a black rub rail and white insert. The white insert is basically black with years of mildew and dirt. Should I try to clean it or just get a new insert? If you guy recommend cleaning it, what should I use? So far acetone is the only thing that will come close to touching it, but is kinda detrimental to my health. If you recommend replacement, where should I get it from?
Thanks, Dan

Try Mold Armor. You get it at the super market. Have never seen anything clean stains like it. Spary on and the stains melt away.

If none of those work you can always wetsand it like I did mine. I tried a lot of different products and nothing would touch it. I started with 150 grit and then went to 320 and finished it off with 600 grit. At the same time I was diong the insert i was also sanding the rail itself because it was really bad as well.
If you don't want to do the black part i would run some duct tape on each edge to protect the black as when you sand a colored area when it dries it will have a white cast to it. This might sound like a lot of work but the last 2 grits go really fast as you are just sanding off the previous grits scratches. In other words take more time with the first grit and the ones that follow will be easy.

Cripes, I never thought of that, and I think I have some kicking around somewhere. Thanks.

You know what I'm honestly thinking of doing? Just getting some of the insert in black and replacing the white with black.

Scotch Brite Pads did the trick with about 90% of my rub rail insert. Matter of fact, scotch brite pads take care of almost all tough cleaning tasks on my boat
