Helm Question

I have a 98 Tournament Master 225hp.I put new end caps on my teleflex 5345 cylinder today.Bled the system and everything.When it's all said and done,you should not be able to turn motor by hand,correct?Are there any check valves in the helm? Does anyone know what helm is used?The only info I could get off the helm was:

6.9 mpa
1000 psi max

I just noticed a leak in my 5345 cylinder on Sunday and some spongy steering. Where did you get your seal kits?

You should not be able to rotate the motor by hand.  Turn the helm stop to stop 2-3 times - it should be hard to move when it reaches the stops - but don't overdo it.  Sometimes there's a little air in the system that you need to get out.  You can do this by going back a forth a few times and them doing the bleeding.  Bleeding the system is kinda counter-intuitive, as it seems like you are relieving the side of the piston with no oil, but that's not the case.

The other option is that the seals are incorrectly placed, which is probably not what you want...

Mark,
No, you should not be able to move the motor, even with air in the lines...OK, maybe a smidge, but that would be it.  How much effort does it take to move the motor?  And, yes, there are check valves in the helm pump.  You have the 1.7 helm, 1.7 meaning the cubic inch capacity of the pump reservoir.  You might want to start a thread on my site under The Teleflex Forum or over on THT.  Marc Adams from Teleflex can help you out...
