Fiberglass console to floor
« on: May 07, 2015, 04:50:57 PM »
I have a brand new console I purchased from panga marine like some others have.  My question is I'm planning on glassing my console to floor.  Thea rest of my boat has already been faired and primed.  I'm just planning on using two layers of 1708 all the way around on inside of console to floor using epoxy resin.  Do you guys think this will be sufficent strength wise,  hoping to save myself from extra finish work by having to glass my console down from outside.

Look at Aaron's thread.  I think that is the way he did it.  I also think he cut the flange off first.

If you dig around in the rebuild forums I think you'll find most people do this very thing. (Capt Matt, Aaron, LilRichard, James, DirtwheelsFL to mention a few - I think Shine did the same on his FB too) I will be glassing mine to the tank cover.  Just make sure you have good clean glass to laminate to on both peices.

Perfect this is good news. Set the console in place and traced around so I'd only grind on the inside to get clean glass.  Left the flange on min and just going to fill with thickened epoxy when I make my radius for glassing to the floor. Thanks for the quick info everyone

yeah, 2 layers 1708 is good, just be sure to overlap up the sides and bottom.  I would make first layer 6" wide and the second 12", that way you get plenty of bonding.  on my last two boats I also made  fillet on the outside and used some woven tape. Having some tape on the outside adds a lot of strength and it makes a clean joint that stays clean
