DAMAGED OMC FLYWHEEL
« on: December 22, 2013, 12:11:24 PM »
Did something stupid. ( This is usually how I preface my posts   ) At my Dad's request was trying to make his OMC Johnson 89 25hp a pull start in addition to electric . Bought a parts motor that I think is good to make the conversion. Took a traditional puller and put it way out to the perimeter , tightened down to much, and popped a piece of the edge off . After said screw up jb welded it back . Can I move forward with this , crank it , test it . Figured I'd ask the smart guys. Thanks guys, and Merrry Christmas

I'm not one of the smart guys, but I'll take a shot anyway.  JB Weld is some good stuff, but your talking about a piece of metal rotating at several thousand RPM.  That piece will become a missile if it comes loose.  IMO, the risk of injury is just not worth it.

Well said Craig and very true. The flywheel may also be bent now and/or micro cracked; dangerous @5000 rpm. The proper place to attach the puller is through the 3, 1/4 or 5/16 threaded holes at the center of the flywheel hub. Use a harmonic balancer puller,  not a jaw type puller; most auto parts stores will rent one. So I'm assuming it broke a piece of the ring gear off? If so, eventually the starter pinion gear will break the JB weld repair anyway. Replace the flywheel.

Ditto to the above.  Never remove a flywheel with an jaw-type puller from the OD of the flywheel.

FYI, I just replaced the harmonic balancer on the Jeep, 5.2L Chrysler.  Rented the puller from AZ, worked like a champ...

Yes,  replacement it please!
Not worth keeping it for the damage it could do.
