Radio questions(VHF and AM/FM)
« on: May 04, 2012, 09:43:24 AM »
Putting my boat back together and installing my electronics in my overhead box on my T-Top..Question is this...I have a VHF radio(West Marine) that is hooked to my GPS(Garmin), they sit side by side about 2 inches apart in the box, I have the VHF mounted on the ceiling of the box, leaves an open space under it... Would it cause interference to mount my AM/FM stereo under it in the box, I have room on the other side of the GPS to mount it but was looking to save that room for  maps, handheld gps, phones, etc..Thanks for any info.....I will be mounting the stuff this weekend.. :pirat:

Most are shielded, but check with the manufacturer and they will be able to tell you. I would worry more about the heat coming from the stereo and cooking the VHF.

You will be fine as long as you have an inch or so between them for air circulation.

As a side note, don't be tempted with one of those splitter things that combine the VHF and AM/FM on the same antenna.  Those things compromise the performance of both units.
