115hp enough for a 1977 19-6?
« on: June 20, 2009, 06:52:03 PM »
I have a pretty soft '77 19-6 with a 1995 150hp v6 Suzuki EFI that need a new short block for about $5k.  Alternative is a local dealer I trust who has a 2000 Tohastu 115hp - well maintained, all records, etc... and ready to go for about $3,500 installed.

1) wondering how the 115hp will drive this gal.  The 150 is a bit heavy, but damn she flies on a calm day...  flip side is that the 115hp is about 100lbs lighter and would give me a little more sea room in the transom.

2) if you had to choose - what option?  (and no, buying new is not a possibility right now)

3) drastic option is to buy the Mako 211 down the street.

4) Dream option is to re-build the boator find a more solid 19-6...but also out of reach.

thanks!

115 will be fine.  35-40mph .  I've heard some so-so things about older 2stroke Suzuki's, but I've never heard anything bad about a tohatsu.  My neighbor is a commercial shrimper and drags a net all day with a tohatsu.

If the boat's soft as you say, you'd be better off with a lighter outboard.

That 115 should run it nicely.

What do you mean by "soft"?

"soft" meaning decks are a bit squishy, and the transom, while solid, is not exactly a rock.

Just purchased a '73 19'6 w/ Yamaha F115...

Was worried about the weight but it is ok... The 115 is plenty of power...

the 115 is ok if you dont carry a heavy load, my '96 with a 112 johnnyrude runs average 37-38 mph, and i've seen almost 43 mph (42.8 to be exact)
