Highly unlikely that you problem is internal to the trans itself. Jeep has always used the AW-4 (Aisin Warner manufacturer by Toyota I believe) auto in the Cherokee. It's darn near bulletproof.
I accidentally shifted my '00 XJ from D to R while on the highway pulling the boat at 60.... ZERO damage done. Try that with a Chrylser auto....

I'll have my mechanic check out the transmission. Shifts fine and no burnt fluid so maybe it's OK.

Remove the cover on the front of the trans and get a good look at the flexplate. It's a known issue for the mouting bolts to back out and/or the flexplate to crack.
If the bolts are backing out, just retighten them to factory specs. If the flexplate is cracked, grab a replacement from your friendly, neighborhood scrap yard. :)

Last weekend the ground was too soft to move it across the seller's lawn were it's sitting. Picking it up tomorrow. Trailer appears to be in good condition but it's still an unknown to me so we'll take the truck plus a follow vehicle to keep an eye on things. Will post pictures
