240 with twin OMC 200’s
« on: November 23, 2020, 12:46:47 AM »
Have any of you tried this insane setup? I’m wondering if the hull can take it and if not what would have to be done to beef it up for this kind of horsepower. Any of you guys ever tried it? I’m thinking about closing the transom and putting a positive buoyancy Armstrong bracket on it.

Would you mind if I asked what your purpose of putting that much HP on a 240? These Classic Aquasports don’t perform well with a lot of HP like a deep vee would. With the lower 14 degree dead-rise at the transom, they are better suited with moderate HP (based on load) for a shallow draft but comfortable and fairly dry ride in moderate sea conditions. The 240 Seahunter was rated up to 275hp I believe from the factory. Although not as sensitive as the 222 flatbacks from 65-71, the 240 can be weight sensitive if too much weight is hung off the back and no counterbalancing done. Most rebuilds done that I have seen go with 225-300hp and the latter will take you to about 55mph. Twin 200 OMCs would run about 450lbs each and with a bracket would put you about 3-400lbs heavier than a single 4 Stroke.

Max horsepower on the 246 CCP was listed at 280.  That’s on a deep V.  I can’t find the max horsepower on the 240, but with the 12 degree deadrise of an Osprey style hull, I’m sure it’s less. With a beefed up and rebuilt transom, you might be able to get away with twin 150s, but I think the boat would balance out better and perform just fine with a pair of 115s or a single 250.

Here is a link to a 240 cuddy (I think we have one member with one) that uses the 240 hull. It states 275. https://classicaquasport.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=13272&title=as-24-cuddy&cat=545

Here is the center console version as well. Looks like they should be about the same across the different styles.

Additionally, twin 135hp motors (I think the largest Outboard OMC made in the early 70s) @ 270-300lbs each matches what a single 225-300 V6 4-Stroke weighs these days.

Hope that helps.
