iPad and Blue Chart
« on: January 11, 2013, 12:16:03 PM »
One of the boys at work has this little gem:
http://www.amazon.com/Garmin-Portable-Bluetooth-GLONASS-Receiver/dp/B008L2QAXK/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1357524387&sr=8-7&keywords=Garmin+Bluetooth

He has some wildly cool aviation stuff on an iPad that talked to the Garmin that did just about all of the stuff that $100,000 worth of installed avionics does.  It got me thinking..

Has anyone tried this rig with an iPad and Bluecharts as a plotter and if so how well does it work?  I have tried to dig up some info but have not been able to get a definitive answer to whether or not 3G is needed to make use of the charts while underway..

Same question applies to street atlases.. I still like old fashion paper maps but would like to get more out of my iPad then the Aquanet and Pandora...  Yes I am a closet geek....

Any guidance would be most welcome!!

I have a Samsung 10.1 Galaxy Tab and I downloaded the Navionics App. and I use that as a back up or secondary chartplotter.  Works GREAT using the internal gps sensor.  I just prop it up on my console and go.  I have a military Gumdrop case on it to protect it.  My buddy has an I-pod and he does the same thing.  The external GPS is not needed for boats.  Aircraft need a better GPS that updates faster due to the speeds and altitudes etc.  The I-pad in a plane is neat for charts etc and as a navigation reference etc but you still need the mega buck panel mounted stuff since it has to be certified and inspected on a regular basis.

Thanks Bruce!  This is an iPad 2 and has no internal GPS and the box on the boat has no Bluetooth.. Does the Samsung have internal GPS?

We just put WAAS, HTAWS and TCAD into the ship at work.. $85K and still working the bugs out, the WAAS change the part number of the Garmin 530, it added a W.(!!)That in turn voided the NVG STC because the STC did not say 530 series.. So it requires a resubmission. Doesn't matter that the 530 upgrade had nothing to do with the display, just a card in the box.. In the mean time it is back to flying in the DARK.  Gotta love the gubmint....

ahhh OK I don't know much about the I-pads I thought they all had GPS.  Yes the Samsung has GPS.  I have the 4G model from Verizon.  I also have the Navionics app  on my Casio Commando android smart phone.  It's milspec and be submerged!  Now WAAS is a whole different subject.

FWIW, I have an app called "iNavX" on my iphone and ipad.  It allows you to download any NOAA chart that is produced, and then the GPS will locate you on the chart if you're within its area.  It's a great backup to have on the boat; last year I used it down in the Keys as our primary GPS and had great success with it.

Jeppesen has a nice free marine navigation app called Plan2nav for both android and I-pads.  The app is free but I think the maps may cost a small fee.  It is nice since it allows trip planning and way point storage and you can download weather too!

I have the "new" I pad, I have the life proof case for it.
I was at the Fred Hall Fishing Show this weekend and purchased a float for it as well.
(an orange kinda ring around the case).
I bought this little thingy called a Dual universal gps.

Here is what is really cool.
I don't need the 3 or 4 g network.
The Ipad works with the gps in wi fi mode.
Works the same with an IPhone too.
You do not use your phone network for data.
I had 4 USB ports installed with my rewire as well.
2 in the electronics box, 2 in the console.

BTW I have Navtionics and Garmin downloaded apps.
I have the ram mount for the t top
It is a really nice little system.

I really like it

I've been using this GPS http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004M3BICU/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

expensive I know but you don't have to jailbreak your ipad2 to get this one to work.

Along with Transas iSailor http://www.isailor.us/

and a RAM mount for the iPad which works with my Griffin waterproof case

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008TO38JE/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004SPVZKW/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Picture of the ipad/case and ram mount will be under my pictures. It all works very well indeed.

My plan is to use this with navionics HD.

The element is 8",GPS,WIFI,4G and most importantly WATERPROOF.

They go for 120-180 used and have similar specs to the Ipad 2.

Bryan what charting app do you use, does the app stored the chart on the pad and would you say the iPad acts as a decent plotter?

Chris from what I read about Transas it seems to me that you need to have a 3-4g link to upload the chart data.  Did I rad that wrong?  I don't have a data phone and the pad is not 3G.  Are the charts web based or device based??

Thanks gents!!!

I have the Navtionics and the Garmin App.
I think I like the Nav App better, the Garmin is good though, maybe I am more use to the Navtronics?
I have another app that overlays weather and wind.
I would say it is a really good back up unit. Although I do know people who use it as a primary plotter.
It does wok very well.
