I think that the boat was rated for a 130 if I remember right.  Spend some time in our PhotoGallery - we have a ton of stuff on the first page.

Would not recommend it. A 3 cyl 90 would be perfect. Keep the weight down.

A four cyl. 2 stroke Merc would max her out IMHO. For sure not a six.

the 1975 model v4 johnson/evinrudes 120-140 hp weighed in around 365 lbs, use that as your max weight for your 17 ft

the 2002 150 yamaha v6 weighs in around 465 lbs, too heavy IMHO

I have the 1989 model evinrude 110 hp that weighs in around 320 lbs, I'll make sure I throw all my gear in the front. seems to have plenty of power. but we always seem to want more.... :bounce:

Back in the day ('75) you'd find 70s, 90, maybe an inline 6 Merc 115 on them (if they were made back then - the motor that was on my 170 when I bought it) and they didn't weigh much - maybe 300 lbs max, less for the 70 but not much.
The low transom (notch 8"ish above the water) should make you think twice about putting more weigh on the aft - especially when you come off plane   My 115 is about 320 and is about the max I would put on it.  I wouldn't mind getting an old 115 merc inline 6 and somehow blowing it out.  There was a posting on one not too long ago here.
Speed, the ultimate goal it seems    Guilty as charged.....
The hull is the hull and the speed you get will depend on a few things like whether you have gelcoat or paint on the bottom, waxed?, other than that little things like weight distribution, trim, prop, etc will tweek it a bit.  Best I have gotten with bottom paint is 40.  Some have gotten more, some less.

130 is the max rated HP on my 170.  I have the 60 degree V4 90 loop charged on my 170 and she gets up on a plane like RIGHT NOW!  Even with three people and a bunch of gear.  A 150 would be scary on a 170 and it would weigh WAY too much.

As others have said, a 1975 Aquasport 170 has a maximum HP of 130.  A 90 works well and a 115 seems to be the hot setup.  This boat also has a 20" transom, so watch out for that as well.

See ya on the water!

Wow 465lbs for a 150 ? Thats one fat mota' no wonder they are slugs, Inline 6 mercs have been around since the late 50's the '59 mark 75 is an I6., i would put a 90/115 /150 inline Merc on it myself, still a dime a dozen, easy to fix, and strong.
