1965 aquasport 22-2 repower
« on: February 07, 2015, 07:20:47 PM »

So I picked up a new motor for the boat a 98 Mercury 150 offshore 2.0l Tuesday, I pulled the old 140 Johnson off and began to strip old layers of paint off today, seems like the boat had been repainted a couple times some bondo under some of the layers. Tomorrow I plan on filling/prep for a quick coat primer and paint so I can get back in the water this year.

Motor looks clean and well taken care of!

Has any body ever try this 2 in one fibral glass fiber repair paste?

Yes, many hulls seem to gain paint with age. :62:

I can't recall ever seeing any reference to your two part product on this site.

What exactly are you using it for?

The boat at one time was powered with twin outboards and the 8 holes from the original motor have all been plugged with wooden dowl pins but the bondo on the outer skin has chipped and flaked away exposing the dowl pins. I was recommended to use fibral glass paste and finish with dolphin glaze a self leveling finish resin, he gave me what he had left after doing floors in his boat. He said it would be good for small to medium holes (quarter dia. or less) and good for seams and gap filling. I am hoping to fill the ends of the dowl pinned holes and small screw holes in the transom vs using bondo.

Used that fibral repair paste worked pretty well, very user friendly. Filled the holes and rough sanded

Does anybody know the exact lengths for control cables and steering cable? I bought a new Mercury binnacle control and will need to order gen 2 cables but have not pulled the old cables yet.

While you realize that measuring the old is a good procedure, this question comes up from time to time.

if you haven't already visited the "Controls" forum, here are a few threads to get you started in estimating the lengths you need.

Though none are specific to your exact model, the theory is true for all.

Good luck.

I replaced the controls and cables in my 1971 22-2 last month.  I used 16' cables and they worked out fine with my jack plate.  If you don't have a jack plate, 15' would probably do.  I didn't need to replace the steering cable, but Teleflex has a pretty good site with instructions on how to measure to get the right length...or, you could go hydraulic.

I ended up using 13ft telexflex cables I was able to make out the old part # and ordered a new one.
Ran great today, running 36-37mph at 5200rpm

What pitch propeller are you running? We should see some higher full throttle RPM numbers. 5600-5800 WOT would be preferred.

Its a 14 1/2 dia 19 pitch I believe it's the original based on the part #, my motor says 5600 rpm max would it be safe to be 5600-5800 range? I would like to upgrade the prop its a little worn out small nicks and dings on the edges but nothing terrible. The previous owner took the motor off a 98 proline said it went 43 at 5300rpm. The 1st day I went out I still had some premix in the tank from priming the oil injection about half tank, yesterday I filled up and ran it almost empty so my next should be just gas. It did run a little better yesterday wot was 37-38 using a cell phone app, and rpms were about 5300 using the gage on the dash, it may not be correct I dialed it in at idle using a digital photo sensor tachometer getting it within 20 rpm or so but did not check to verify if my tach on my dash was accurate at wot compared to the digital photo sensor tachometer. I haven't changed the plugs out either waiting for the premix to run out. The only things I have done is change the lower end oil and verify my t stat was operating correctly my starboard bank runs slightly hotter by about 10-15 degrees measured at the plug.

it looks almost like the motor is mounted too low like its mounted on the top hole? that would also cause lower WOT rpm...  you should be seeing at least 40-42 mph.

It is sitting too low I had to trim it up about 1 1/2 inches so that it would be at its highest rpm I would loose about 300-400 all the way down and really lean under full throttle

put a straight edge on the keel with the cavitation plate level with the keel. i like to run about an inch higher. you should be able to easily see the plate on plane
