bottom plug
« on: May 13, 2010, 05:11:55 PM »
I have a 2001 225 EX-  I put the bottom plug in very tight and noticed that 2 to 3threads are showing. Is is ok that the plug doesn't thread all the way in?

Is there an O-ring at the base of the drain plug?  If not, there needs to be... :thumleft:

Its a brass pipe (taper) thread. Make sure the threads are not full of sand or debris. Its ok to have some threads showing. In fact, its better to have some threads showing that ensures the taper is locked in. I clean mine occasionally and put a dab of grease on it to keep the threads smooth and undamaged.

Sorry Seabob,
Didnt mean to step on your toes! I forgot it may have the finger tight version that needs the O-ring... A thousand pardons! I`m thinking about my old 73 that needs the 9/19 wrench to tighten.

Fitz,

My toes are very resilient!  You have the old "square head" plug, one I love, find nothing wrong with it.  But I'm pretty sure jd's is the hand version, although I still put a leatherman on it when I tighten her up...

And BTW, you've got to tell me where I can get one of those 9/19" wrenches from, I've been looking for one for ages!

You can tell when they go  bad, when no threads are showing anymore. And you don't want to over tight them, I have the tendency to do that

Thanks all.

I did put grease on it and used an adjustable.  Do I still need an o-ring though?  I do believe it is the brass tapered plug

Tapered threads (NPT)?  Nope, the plug will never even get close to flush...
