 What is the verdict on Spray Rails for a Flatback?  if they are needed, I want them to be added before the paint job.  My thought was to add 8-10' of rail up front.  I'd appreciate any thoughts




There was another 22-2 flatback with the bottom windows dropped off to the same boat yard- not sure if that is yours LosCoons.  I'm happy with everything G Crafts has ever done for me.  I haven't been in any hurry, so they work on it when they are slow

Good stuff, CB.  I had forgotten about a lot of those discussions, and I was even part of many of them .

I talked to Robb at Young Boats a few weeks ago about spray rails.  He feels that if installed on a 22' boat, the rails should be about 13 feet long or so to be most effective.  Economically, anything over 8' is going to cost a bunch on shipping.  The prices I got from Robb on some of the Barbour rails (without shipping) were $5.50/ft for the R1002 and R1010, and $12/ft for the R1059 (which is what lilrichard used IIRC).  See here for dimensions and drawings of these styles http://www.barbourcorp.com/marine-prod-sprayrails.htm.  I forget the shipping prices - maybe $100 or so?  So we are talking about $250 - $400+.  Overall not too bad, but I'm still undecided.  I plan to add trim tabs, so if what Captain Matt and others say still stands, that may be the better investment.

Also, what are you planning to use for paint?  I'm using gel coat, and the recommendation from Barbour and Robb Young was to not gel coat them.  They come in white or black, and are UV resistant, and would be installed after my boat is gel coated (if I do install them).  Barbour said that if I really wanted to paint them, use Awlgrip or something like that.  But I got the impression that painting them may lead to problems down the road.  I would recommend that you check with the manufacturer before you put anything on them.

i dont have any on mine and after putting a few hours on the boat in some slop in the bay, with a confused swell and wind on the beam, boat remained dry. on the other hand, i will be having an isinglass enclosure made for the lower station. mainly to block wind/rain on colder/crappier days

The hull is painted in Matterhorn White. The gunnels are to be painted next week and then glass the console in. Making a little progress

Came out very nice. Hope to have mine done this weekend now that the rain is more predictable.
Craig I guess the spray rails are out since he said he wanted to add them before paint.

I bailed on the rails since most folks think they are unnecessary.

Now I'm trying to figure out how many horses to put on the back- 150, 175, or 200?  I want to be able to do 45mph with a couple people on board wide open and cruise about 30

I need some advice on horsepower.  I'm not putting a bracket on the boat.  I want to be able to comfortably cruise 30 kts with a couple adults on board and 40kts (45 mph) WOT.  Looking to put a four stroke Yamaha 150/175/200, but want to put a 150 if possible.  Any input would be much appreciated
