Transom cap separation

I've had two AS', a 222 FF and a 196 FF.  Both had problems w/the transom cap separating from the transom.  Didn't see anything specifically addressing this issue in the forums.   I've also heard that it was a common problem on older AS's.    What's the story on this problem and anybody got some good info on repair?   I'd like to avoid redo of the whole transom if possible.   I now own the 196 and it is coming apart rather badly at this point.

Can you post some pix to show us what you're experiencing?  We might have more input if we can see it.

My 170 has the same cracking at the transom.  In looking at the construction pictures of the liner & hull before assembly, it appears the connection line where the liner meets the hull is where the cracking occurs.  Cause for this might be expansion of the wood core in the transom when it gets wet.  Wood will swell no matter what and probably expresses itself as the crack in the transom at the joint.  Since my transom is still rock hard all I've done to address the condition is to seal the area to prevent more warer from getting in.

I am new to the board and just getting started on a project.  Just picked up an older 17 cc Osprey.  I think my pictures might help in the discussion.......

Yes you can post pictures in a thread.  Makes it easier to follow what you're saying if text & pix are together.

Post pictures to a thread by uploading to photobucket or whoever you use then do a copy/paste of the img file name to the thread... Rickk taught me that trick...

Anyway, if your transom has no flex to it when you bounce the tilted-up motor up & down, the transom is probably OK for now but it won't hurt to seal up the cracks to keep water out.  Like death & taxes though, the transom core will need replacement somwhere along the line.  It'll let you know when.

Here are the shots of my transom from the 196 Family Fisherman.  What do you think?   How can I deal w/this?  Transom seems very solid otherwise.  Boat is a 1984, I think.

That's the line where the hull & liner join.

Joint at the transom was faired out with polyester putty only I believe.  No glass tape, hence the crack.

Interesting information.  This provides some insight into how the whole thing came about.
