I just looked at the SEI website. Are they selling "all new parts and housings" for $845.00. If so that is a good deal if they hold up well. I would go that route if I needed one. They must be imported parts but if the are good quality, I guess that would be OK.

Does SEI manufacture any parts themselves?

When they first started the company they sent me an RFQ to stamp and assemble the stainless water pump housings for the Mercury replacement gearcases; relatively low volume of less than 10,000 housings per year and their target pricing was 50% of my quoted price which means I was up against China on the quote. Basically I would have to sell the pump housing for material cost without labor to compete. It is my understanding that they are completely sourced and assembled in China. That's how they can sell a replacement lower unit that costs $2700 built in this country for $895 built in China with a better warranty. It sucks, but thats our global economy.

$2700 was what I was quoted for a new lower unit at a marina.  I wonder if they would have supplied an SEI one

I wouldn't doubt for a minute it's done all the time... Nice mark up! Think about the average guy could care less about were the new assembly came from; its new, shiny, it shifts and it goes when you push the throttle down with a 3 year warranty! So I show the guy the MSRP for an OEM assembly and knock $250 off cause of the super deal I can get and I like him. Such a deal!

Bet you're right.  Got mine rebuilt but probably should have gone with the SEI for half the price of a rebuild.  I was supporting our local economy though  :salut:

nuthin' wrong with rebuilding a merc unit,,the SEI hold up ok,my buddy is a merc race shop, and a tohatsu dealer, they sell 'em to guys with bassboats, and family cruisers,it is a very cheap replacement for factory,,,when they first came around, you could hit a rockpile and they would replace it,lol, not sure if they still do,we put one on a 280 merc. and tried to blow it up,it actually held up,except w/out a nosecone,we didn't try to blow it out at speed, , it's a good replacement for a torquemaster on a stock 200 or less motor.

If you look at their warranty it says they still cover hits!
