Question what is salt life?
« on: November 10, 2012, 12:54:30 PM »
OK, I was on THT, yeah, I know, and I saw a huge rant about something called Salt Life.
The usual A H's carried on about it.

What does Salt Life mean?
Is it a East Coast area?
Why so many comments on it?

I would ask there but, well you know.
Just courious,

Thanks Bryan

Not sure what the discussion was on THT but over here it's surfing/diving/fishing.

Can be all three or be dependent on one's age. Life style persona identifier for youth and former real estate brokers now working at Chick-fil-a.

Decals abound around here. Kinda like Ron Jons and See Rock City

I think they are jealous because someone made up a dumb decal and is getting rich off of it.

I think it is about the coastal life. A means of portraying something different or a lifestyle demographic. Which happened to be very cleverly marketed. Just like emoticons, yellow wrist bands, pink wrist bands, bad fish, etc. I see the salt life decals everywhere. I don't know what they cost but somebody made a fortune on it.  Good for them! The great thing about it is it's non offense, relaxing to me and seems to be completely neutral. Just a saying... What better way to make money. Much more desirable than a pair of rubber bull balls hanging on a trailer hitch. Glad that's passed!

Yes, I was in AZ about a week ago.
I saw a pair hanging, had no idea.

I get the Salt Life stuff now.

Thanks everyone for the opinions

I saw a spin-off the other day that was kind of on the nasty side.  I actually don't remember what it said but it would get deleted if I did remember.

If imitation is indeed a form of flattery, then consider Salt Life duly flattered - and lawyered up.

The Jacksonville Beach startup has gone mainstream, with 2,000 stores nationwide selling its ocean-inspired clothing line and car decals.

With that success comes detractors - and copyright infringers.

It's the ubiquitous decals - "Salt Life" with hibiscus flowers, skulls, surfboards and other beach paraphernalia - that have drawn the most popularity and ire. The six-year-old apparel company now has two full-time employees who do nothing but look for online auction users selling knockoffs, managing partner Richard Thompson said.

"We've brought legal action at least 100 times," he said. "We have policemen going into mall kiosks around the country. There are even churches popping up calling themselves Salt Life, and it's hard to tell them they can't do it."

That tattoo-style lettering is now a trademarked font. The company also owns the term "Salt Life." And its lawyers say they have to vigorously defend what's theirs from copycats.

Take a look around any parking lot in the Jacksonville area, though, and you'll see the spinoffs.

The new companies celebrate other popular pastimes: Hunt Life for outdoorsmen; Swamp Life for Florida Gators fans; even Malt Life, for microbrew buffs.

Swamp Life co-owner Scott Dunn said his stickers ran into some initial resistance - with the University of Florida, not Salt Life. The company has since worked out a deal to sell its decals and T-shirts with official Gators art and the blessing of the powers that be.

Dunn said his product is a nod to Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, better known as The Swamp.

"We have lots of friends that are big-time Gators fans, and we do a lot of tailgating and football games," he said. "That's the Swamp life."

Hunt Life bills itself as an online fraternity for the serious hunter.

There are deer antlered-decals promoting the site and a radio show Saturday mornings on WJXL-AM. The year-old St. Johns County-based website now has more than a 1,000 members, CEO Major Harding said.

"Right now, we're just having a lot of fun with it, and I think we can grow it into a good business," he said.

The stickers at Jacksonville's Bold City Brewery - Malt Life, with barley coming off each end - are unapologetic satire that's become popular with tap room customers, co-owner Susan Miller said.

"My daughter-in-law suggested it," Miller said. "They sell pretty well, and I give it away to people when they come in on their birthdays."

Next up: Malt Life T-shirts.

Thompson and his partners say they love the spinoffs and the attention, even when it's seemingly negative. His favorite so far? Pepper Death, the anti-Salt Life.

Many of the people who post on Pepper Death's Facebook page despise Salt Life for its popularity, and the many consumers who use the products but rarely go near the ocean.

Salt Life managers talked to the guys who make the Pepper Death stickers a while back and told them they were amused.

"They thought we were mad at them," Thompson said. "But we so were not mad. We think it's great."

For most it's what they would RATHER be doing instead of working at Chick-fil-a...

Funny you mention Ron Jon, CB.  Going to UCF, the mornings my classes ended at 10 or 11, I'd bop over to Cocoa Beach to catch some rays, girl watch, whatever.  Usually stop in to Ron Jon's (corner of 520 and A1A, every one remembers those commercials!), pick up a couple of tee's, they were only like $7-$8, the store was tiny, surf boards lined the walls above the clothes racks, everything was crammed in there, and cute girls manned the store.  Just your average surf shop, actually quite blase in the Orlando and east coast areas.  Now?  It's a joke, IMO...

I'm sure Trace has fond memories of the place as well... :thumright:  :thumright:

PS   No FoS here...

Yeah, I knew the FoS wouldnt fly w you.
Here in HB at the pier, Bob, you may know.
There was a shop called Jacks, really awesome when I was a kid.
Now, I take my Daughters downtown for shopping.
It is a mega store joke! We dont even go inside to look.
However, we still have The Froghouse, an awesome surfshop.
kinda sad to see some things change nice to see the good guys survive
and stay the same.

Same with Ron Jon's Bryan, takes up like a city block!  I have their logo in my avater simply because it brings back some great memories...

Holmes Beach on Anna Maria Island had an excellent surf shop...Holmes Beach Surf Shop, very original!   But totally laid back and quiet...probably 'cause there are never any waves on the gulf!!
