Hey All,
     i've got my boat on the trailor right now. Have not been run 4 about 4 weeks. Can I start her up with water running through the flush connector or do I have to have ear muffs. Wanted to get a straight answer so I've come to y'all.

The flushing port is pretty much what it says it is...a port to flush the motor.  Want the water pump to do it's job, as well as be properly lubricated by the water flow coming into the pickups?  Use the muffs.  Every boat I work on has engines that are new enough to have a flushing port.  I NEVER use it, always the muffs...

My next door neighbor has a 05 or so Merc 90 and for the life of us we couldn't figure out how to use standard muffs on it.  Seems the LU was a weird config and we couldn't figure out to get them to fit and stay on it.  So he always uses the special hose that comes with it that you attach a hose to.

For this Merc motor, is a single feed muff good enough or is a dual flow mandatory. I'm sure the dual is best and probably preffered, but is it mandatory.

Single should work just fine.

Do NOT run the motor with the flush port connected!      The flush port reverses the flow of the water pump, so the pump will be pushing against the water pressure from the flush port.  This will kill the water pump impeller in about 30 seconds.  :x  

Use the muffs if you want to run the motor with the boat on the trailer.

I take it you don't have an owners manual.. A quick search online will either get you a free one in an .pdf or you can have one for about $20.

In there you will find all kinds of good info, among which will be specific instructions for the TLC and flushing that your engine needs..

In my Yamaha book in huge bold letters it says DO NOT RUN THE ENGINE USING THE FLUSH PORT..  That is for dockside use only....

Single or dual muff? If you have single, use them.  If you get an over heat alarm, don't panic, just shut down and order a dual set from someplace.  You still were able to run the motor and cycle the gass in the system. Mission accomplished..

I'd like to see the physics on how more water reaches the intake with a "dual feed" muff as opposed to a single. My opinion is that it works much better than the single feed at separating money from wallets.

I have to agree since your only going to get about 4 GPM out of a garden hose.  Single or dual feed....  it's stil the same GPM flowing out of the hose....  When I use my single feed most of the water seems to squirt out the other side anyways.

rick, tell him to put the muffs on from the rear and push as far forward as he can. we have several of them 75/90/115/125 outboards in the marina, its how we have to flush them to keep the muffs from sliding off...
