Uniden Mystic handheld VHF/GPS
« on: October 16, 2012, 10:06:46 AM »
Folks,

I'm wondering if any of you have any suggestions for my situation.

My backup radio is a handheld unit that is also a GPS, A Uniden Mystic, no longer made or supported by the manufacturer. Last season I broke the antenna at the base where is connects to the body of the radio. The black plastic piece in the bottom of the antenna came out. This is not a standard antenna, it's fatter around the base and actually has a small circuit board in it. There are connections on the board that connect to the antenna. In my attempt to do the repair it I epoxied the little round plastic piece into the base of the antenna but it didn't fix anything.    Not only does the GPS not work but the radio, too. And it is a sealed time capsule now!

Anyone have any idea where or how I can get this unit repaired or get a replacement antenna? Maybe an electronics guru or a electronics repair shop you may know of?

I hate to trash this thing, it did work very well. I bought it second hand last season.

I've talked to Uniden on a couple of occasions in e-mails and phone calls. I thought I could get it RMA'd with them but when I was ready to send it off they told me they couldn't do anything now. :x

Thanks in advance for any input!

You MIGHT be able to find a bored tech willing to work on it but the hourly rate would pay for a new radio.

This is the only 3rd party repair shop I know of and I have not used them.

Jon,
I go with JJ here.  By the time you find a shop, ship it, get it repaired...you can have a brand new radio with a warranty that works, for less...JMO

Thanks guys, I was afraid of that.  The new units are going for around $200 for vhf/gps. I'd say you are both correct.

Thanks for the input!
