Having owned a 441 I'd say the 541 resolution would be fine.  Readability in direct sun is a huge factor.  I would say the reason for the big sale though is Garmin has a new unit getting ready to come out.

No doubt they are trying to clear some inventory for the new models.  The price is great and will allow me to do something else like trim tabs for example which I probably would have put on the backburner.  Still, that 546s sure has a nice picture.  It's like going from an old tube TV to an LCD HD.......

I have had no issues reading my unit or with the brightness during any time of day or night.

I do have a large T-Top on my vessel so I can't speak to the performance if it were mounted on a helm in direct sunlight without the benefit of a top of some kind.

Pray for some weekends with warm weather and calm winds please :)

I have a Garmin 521 unit it works very well in the sun even without top up.I can read bottom at WOT without problem it took some moving transducer up alittle then down alittle till I found the spot it liked best.If I was looking for a new unit I would be getting a chirp unit.I do alot of deep dropping and those units kick but even in shallow water I would think about them with the new ones coming out the cost is not much more.

Late to the party here but I have a 541 stand alone plotter and love it, still have my 400c FF that works good but will upgrade it soon, maybe a Dragonfly not sure but I like separate units when the screens are that size, when you do a spit screen on a 5" combo things get real small.

Bruce,
I don't think I can't pass up the West Marine deal on the 541s.  I really had my heart set on the 546s because of the screen resolution but I wouldn't have been able to afford the g2 card right away.  With the 541s and the g2 card rebate I'll be sitting pretty.  I was thinking about the Raymarine Dragonfly for a while but it's too new and I wont be able to add on stuff like the fuel flow sensor.  I'll let you know when I seal the deal.
