Pull/Pop up cleats
«

Been thinking of putting Pull/Pop up cleats on the top of gunnels back near the transom on my 170.
Any ideas on how to thru bolt?

Mornin'
I did it with mine, but a word of caution. Most pop ups assume you will be mounting to a surface with coring. The aft section of the 17 has none, it is just glass, therefore the backing plate that comes with most pop ups will not sit flush on the underside of the gunnel when tightened all the way down. If you can find ones that will tighten all the way, you will be in luck. I had to use washers, which were cut to look like an uppercase "D" to get the cleat snug. Even at that, the majority of the responsibility for the cleat is holding a bumper.
I hope this helps.

Some of the high dollar ones rattle real bad at idle. Feel free to PM.

I have two pop ups on the stern and a pull up on the bow, all three from Accon. The ones on the back are mounted with aluminum backing plates and the one on the front has the lifting assembly that connects with the bow eye. The pull up cleat is the only one that rattles.

Nando's pop-ups from Accon are still working great, even being on his boat 11+ years. I have found that some manufacturers of pop ups (Whitecap in particular), the mechanisms inside the cleat tend to fail, leaving you with either a permanent "up" cleat, or, worse, a nice piece of useless deck jewelry when they freeze in the down position...
Therefore, I recommend pull ups...

I installed the "pull up" cleates on top of the gunwale at the rear. The starboard one I could reach thru the access cover. The port side I used a 3" cover plate on the side to access the fender washers and studs. The fiberglass in that area is about 3/8" thick. I will post pics later.
Port side with 3" cover plate. Starboard side accessed thru access cover, Pie Plate. You have to be creative with your tools to get the fender washers and nuts installed..!
Thickness of fiberglass compared to a 1/2" threaded rod.

Thanks for the respond guys
My main concerns is the thru bolt
I figured a access cover was the only way.
I was wanting it towards the aft as far as I can as to I keep the boat in the water and the mooring ropes pull better(Thats another story). But I think I have a bunch of foam back there?
Kraw What did you come across?

The cleats shown are about 10" forward of the transom. Maybe less. There was foam in there but it's easily removed. It's not like the foam used today.

I spent the extra $ on the Accon cleats and am very happy with them, no rattle or rust after a year of hard use.
My bow is a pull up and the stern cleats are pop up.
Accon has all kinds of flush mount cleats with lots of different mounting options, sure you can find a set that will work for you.

The cleats I show installed are 6" from the outside of the transom to the leading edge of the cleat. The cleats I used are the "less expensive" cleats with the (2) 5/16" threaded studs. No problem installing them in that area.
