1986 Aquasport 170 striper rebuild
« on: October 02, 2012, 05:39:32 PM »
hello everyone, I'm new to the famous aquasport forum. well to begin with i will start rebuilding my 1986 aquasport 170 striper sometime next week, i got the boat a year ago, from my neighbor who had it in his back yard for 10 years without starting or cleaning. since i got the boat it has been a constant struggle, with the motor, at a point i had the boat doing 35 mph according to my gps until it started acting up. i came to the conclusion that i am spending time and money fixing the motor and a lot of little details the boat has, so here i am. I'm going to do lift the transom a few inches and re enforce the transom so that i can put my 2008 mercury optimax 150 i have in my other boat. i figure its a new motor less than 100 hours, powerful and light weight for its size. i know it will get me to were i have to go in a heart beat. and as well i'm going to do some work on the floor it has a soft spot next to the console. and i im also debating on panting the boat or get it vinyl wrapped in a cool design.  stay posted more pictures coming soon. if you guys have any ideas please let me know .

Just keep us informed on how it goes and what you find when you start on the floor. The boat will definately have plenty of power. How much does that 150 weigh? 400lbs.?

You might be suprised on how well the hull will look by removing the decals, wet sanding, and buffing. You may like it..!

From your pictures the hull looks in good shape. Kraw2 is right with a little sanding and sanding and sanding and some good quality paint she could look great.  His rebuild is looking very nice as I may say.

As said, the hull looks pretty decent.
What engine is on there now? The 150 may be too much weight for the hull and change the CG causing it to be unsafe coming off plane (could sink - has happened before). 320 lbs is about max on these hulls.

Don't waste a 150 on that boat. She wasn't designed for that much stern weight.Looks like she currently has a 75 or 90 Merc which is well worth fixing if not too far gone. So what are the current issues with the engine?

Klos, welcome aboard!

Advice has been offered regarding center of gravity, weight, and horsepower.

One more consideration: insurance and liability. Not sure of the max CG horsepower for the 170, but do know a 19-6 is 150 HP, a 22-2 is 200 HP.

A 150 on that ride is a ticking bomb in terms of liability. Any property damage/personal injury involving that boat with a 150 on the back...big trouble.

A single 90 will push her to around 40 mph wide open throttle.

Good luck, keep us posted!

Max HP on my 86 170 Osprey was 130.

Should be listed in the Photo Gallery.

Good morning!

For what it's worth, I would take the existing motor to a Merc mechanic. The 150 is way, way too heavy for that boat. The 17's don't take well to stern weight.

I've done a lot of research in regards to the right motor, and most people seem to think a 90 is perfect.

Welcome aboard!

Thank you all for your advice.  The current motor is a 90 HP. When I purchased the motor the compression was even at 120 on all cylinders. The timming of the idle screw was off. And the carburators was not synchronized right. I managed to adjust the motor a lot. but on idle the Roman was at 1500 to 2000 rpms. The motor pushed the boat just fine. But I still insisted on taking the motor to a merc mechanic. And adjusted idle and carbs. Problem now is that when the motor gets on a plane it goes over revolution and comes to 5 mph on 4k rpms. I'll have to bring the throttle back to idle and shoot out the hole again. And the same problem continues. A week ago I checked the compression and it was 110,110,100. I thought the 150hp optimax I have will be good on the boat if I lift the transom and re enforce it. My optimax weight is 423 lb. Weighs the same as a 125 HP . I figured since a 130hp weighs around 350 give or take . I'll be like a difference  of most 80 pounds..  ill just use the compartments in the floor as coolers ..  I dont know what to do anymore with this motor.

Do you think the compression at 110,110,100 will impact the overall performance of the motor?
