Container ships, Scott.  Single screw.  And look at the WOT RPMs...102.  Yes, 102.  Each cylinder displacement is over 1800 Liters!!!  I mean, that's 246 Ford 7.3L Powerstrokes!!!  Per cylinder!

What's even cooler Scott, is the outfit that builds the trucks and hauling devices that move this stuff...Viktor-Baumann.  The shuttle transport would be a piece of cake for them!!

Ummm...maybe not.  That transporter/crawler is like REALLY big!!!

Yeah they are up grading the crawlers to support the new Ares V and it's launch tower from a lift capacity of 12 million pounds to 18 million pounds!

Is it just me or does that thing look REALLY top heavy?  Also look not only at the size of flywheel, but the size of the pinion gear on the starter!

Wurtsila, out of Finland.  Check out the specs on the motor...

Quote
engine configuration
turbocharged two-stroke diesel straight engine, 6 to 14 cylinders
cylinder bore
960 mm
piston stroke
2500 mm
engine displacement
1820 litres per cylinder
engine speed
22–102 revolutions per minute
torque
7,603,850 newton metres (5,608,310 lbf·ft) @ 102 rpm
mean effective pressure
1.96 MPa @ full load, 1.37 MPa @ maximum efficiency (85% load)
mean piston speed
8.5 meters per second
specific fuel consumption
171 g/(kW·h) (126 g/(bhp·h), approx. 3.80 litres per second) @ full load; 163 g/(kW·h) (120 g/(bhp·h)) @ maximum efficiency
power
up to 5720 kW per cylinder, 34320 to 80080;kW (46 680 to 108 920 bhp) altogether
power density
29.6 to 34.8 kW per tonne, 2300 tonnes for the 14 cylinder version
amount of fuel injected in a single cycle of single piston
~160 g (about 6.5 ounces) @ full load
crankshaft weight
300 tons[3]

Check out the torque!!!  And since the crank weighs 300 tons, I think she has a little counter weight way downstairs...
wonder what the machining tolerances are on that thing?!

Remember Aaron, there is the low side and the high side of tolerances, yet the part still meets spec.  Let's say I've got +/- .005 on the connecting rod.  Another +/-.005" on the crank bearings.  Another +-.005" on the crank journals...high side to low side, it all adds up, so I would assume there is some "elasticity" that makes it all work.  Unless they blueprint the damn things!!!

Brothers...he has a big truck.

Little truck, big motor...

How do you think my Osprey would run with this motor?
I might need bigger trim tabs

Tabman will hook you right up!! You might add spray rails and move the boot top up an inch or two

In a previous life I was put down inside the number 5 cylinder of a Bermister & Wain to clean and inspect the intake ports.  That rig was a direct reversing 640x1400mm 7000 hp two stroke with a top speed of 132 rpm.  What a rythm it made underway, it would put you to sleep in about a minute. One of the most memorable moments was going into Mobile, the watch engineer forgot to start the compressor for the staring air tank.  Wasn't the Captain BS    :bom:  :pale: mad when we ran out of air and couldn't start anymore when we were about 50 feet from the pier......  The compressor was the size of a 5 hp Craftsman    with the tank the size of a VW bus.. :?:  Go figure....
The ship was built in Italy, Panamainian flag, with a Central American crew, a German Master and a Yugoslav Chief and two of us Mainiacs out on cadet training.. Good times, good times...
