Alternative to 4200?
« on: August 24, 2012, 09:53:14 AM »
I have to drive a million miles to get to west marine, and I just realized I dont have any 4200 caulk. IS there anything you guys use that I can buy at homedepot / Lowes that would work just as well? I need this cault to mount the motor, run a bead acound the console, deck fittings, etc.

Any Ideas?

Any Ideas?

I get my 4200 from Ace Hardware. Haven't used the big tube (caulking gun) in a while. They may still carry it.

You can use UV resistant silicone for anything above the waterline.

My HD in Spring Hill carries both the cartridge ($13) and the small tube of 5200.  Don't worry, not as permanant as you might have been led to believe! :thumright:

Yea, I bought the 5200 from home depot. I need something a little less permanant, as I'll be using this to mount things on the console.

This is what I used on the tank hatch (4000 UV) and all other hatch/pie plates I've installed.Apparently there is some plastics it may dissolve but it seems to hold up better than silicon. Beckson hatches state to use silicon only but I've seen no degradation on mine after about two years.
My concern was with the yellowing that 5200 will do.  Need to work fairly quickly but not a lot different than silicon on the skinning. Very easy to work with if you need removal and cleans up great. Seams on tank hatch are still bright white.

Again, Ace is the place.

Mine too and as long as you can get a razor blade to it it comes right off.

I bought a tube of marine sealer at Wally World a few years back. It was in a blue toothpaste type tube with a cap. I used it on my Hydra sport and it seemed like it was OK. Probably not as good as the 3M but it worked. Might be ok in a pinch.
