Pamlico Sound - old drum
« on: August 24, 2012, 09:23:35 AM »
Been putting my time in with the new boat out in the Pamlico Sound.  While I haven't convinced the tarpon to bite, we've got on the old drum.  Here are a couple of pics, hope to get some better ones this weekend, hopefully with more of the boat!

There is some great drum fishing in the Pamlico in the fall!   :salut:   They start schooling up in October/November and the bite is on!

I've caught some Tarpon around Oriental, but it seems you have to fish with bait to get them.  They will follow the shrimp boats in and feed on what gets thrown over the side.  You've got a pretty good chance of getting a 'toon if you can  get in the wake of a returning shrimper that's throwing by-catch over the side...   :thumleft:

Good luck!

I'm aware of that, but it's never too late to learn.

Check out this school of big drum near Oregon Inlet, NC a couple years ago - taken in late October - look carefully and you can see the sharks following for an easy meal:

DAMN!!

Bill, excellent fighter and even better eater!  You stay away from the bulls, they can be worm-ridden.  Our slot down here is 18-24, the best are the 21-22s...

The slot is 18-27. If it is 24 then I'm in a heap of trouble.

Used to be 24 IIRC...

Come to think of it, I believe it always was 27...I am a dumba$$...

One of the teams fishing our 16 Shipoke at the IFA Regional redfish tournament in Titusville, FL won 2nd place. 24.09 lbs combined for the 4 weighed fish over 2 days. Those are some chubby slot reds when you consider they can't be over 27". Congrats to Tadd and Ron.

Allow me to end the discussion.  These are drum, old drum, or reds in NC!  Got on them again this weekend, thought you guys would like to see this slob.  Caught at least 6 about his same size; what an incredible fight and amazing fish.
