well it feels good to do be doing something other than grinding!

Got the composite in and got it cut to shape.

I have a newb question on laminating the two 3/4 pieces together.

Do you wet out both pieces, lay the mat and then laminate together all at one time or lam one side, lay the cloth, let dry, then wet out the other side and laminate?

Do you use cabosil paste or is straight resin lam?

so do you think this is worth money? You would figure at 300 a sheet the dust is worth something right?

I can only tell you what I did with my 3/4" plywood transom core.  On a flat and level place I layed down some visquene and then layed one piece of wood down. I then wet the face of the piece then wet out 3/4oz mat, 1708 cloth and 3/4oz mat and then wet the inside of the other piece of plywood and layed it on top.  I then set cinder blocks on top.  Some people drive a screw in two places to keep the pieces aligned since they want to slide around.

I think everyone lams the pieces together first and then put them in the boat.  When you put it in the boat then you can use thickened poly or epoxy trowelled on the transom face and then put in the core and clamp it in to set up.

I'm sure others will chime in soon - people like Matt who used composite panels in his rebuild.

My .02 cents... When using polyester, go the mat route.

Also, a little tip when using wood for a core. Drill a couple of holes and use dowls to hold the alignment. That way you can just leave them in and they stay a part of the core, plus there aren't any holes to fill after the fact.  :thumleft:

In any event, I really need to get back on it with mine. I have been sidetracked between work/side work and haven't touched the boat in over a month... So much for my five month deadline so far...

Its looking good though. Good job!

I used a single sheet of 2 inch for my transom if I remember right. I did build my stringers though by sticking two sheets of 3/4 together.
I stuck the sheets together before putting them in the boat. I laid them flat and put weights on them until dry and set up. Then cleaned up any stuff that came out before trimming and installing. I would go with a layer of biaxle on each sheet then a piece of mat between. Don't skimp on the resin Clamps might be a good way to squeeze them together till it goes off. The main thing is you do not want any voids between the two sheets.

well Ive been MIA for a bit but still been busy on the boat...

a few pictures to update.

I will say I am getting better at the glass work and its getting easier to mix and figure materials. I have made some mistakes that is for sure and probably made some extra work for myself but Im learning and getting better each time.

Ive failed to take pictures of some of the steps. Sometimes its hard to take pics when you are working solo.
Laminating the two sections together.

finished grinding out the rest of the hull and you can see the canopy I bought to work under... what a huge help that is.

set the transom

transom unclamped

There is something to say for being able to work without being interupted. You can see on the last layer of 1808 I put on was not trimed to shape. I cut all the others before hand and had them waiting. I got interupted on the last one and never finsihed it. It got folded up and never realized it till I had it all wet out and unfolded it. I will have to do some cutting and grinding to make it pretty again. I probably did a little overkill on the tabbing but oh well.

Looks good  :salut:
Every little bit of visual progress makes you feel good, sometimes it takes a long time to get to a point where you can make a little visual progress though. Seems like I work on mine for a couple weekends and then finally have some visual progress

just a quick update... lots going on lately but made a little progress.

Stringer layout completed, cut the foam and started tabbing in.

I bought a tank. I have to completely thank Craig (CLM65) for the heads up. I scored a stupid good deal and it fits perfect. Its a great example of the great people on these forums. He went out of his way to send me a msg saying he saw something that might work for my boat and its at a great price, and it did and was. Probably saved me 300 to 500 dollars.

Ordered 20 gallons more of resin and a roll of 1808 to complete the stringers.

Im moving my business into a new building this weekend so I hope I will have some extra time on my hands starting next week and will be able to put lay the glass on the stringers. Im thinking 4 layers of 1808. It will certainly be thicker than the originals. Thoughts anyone?

probably not the coolest way to support them but some wedges and bricks held them in straight and level

Looking great Ryan!  Glad the tank deal is working out for you.  It is honestly a bigger tank than I was looking for, but as they say - better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.  It really is too good a deal to pass up.  Now I just need to figure out how far forward to mount it.  Have you decided that yet?  And how much are you raising the deck?

The floor is raised about 3 inches.

Not sure on the tank yet, Im going to have to have to play with the layout a bit.

Tank placement:

A member a few years back restored a FB.

The pics in the water at rest were a little "different." The tank was too far forward.

Just a caveat guys.

That is my biggest worry, Scott.  Captain Matt suggested placing the front of the tank about where the casting deck starts, or maybe even a little bit more forward than that.  I greatly respect his opinion, but his tank is 20 gallons smaller than ours and has much different dimensions, so I'm trying to gather any additional information I can.  It would be great if someone has experience with installing a 72 gallon, 68 inch long tank in a 222 with a bracket on the back.

Hello Oldschool67, just wanted to let you know what we did. We went with a small 35 gal. Moeller tank pushed as far forward as they could get it. The idea is that we are keeping the boat light for better mpg and lots of new fuel will be cycled through the tank/motor. My boat is being set up for inshore/nearshore so hopefully this will be ok. Even if I'm running 3.5 mpg I'll have a range of around 122.5 miles. Also went with a mechanical Moeller fuel sender on the floor in the console, an electric secondary sender attaches to the mechanical to read on the console. Your boats looking great!
