Ok I need some help

I’m going to use the trim and tilt pump from the merc I/O, that I pulled out of this boat I’m working on. I’m going to mount it in my 19-6 and use it on a jack plate, that the pump burned up on. I like the idea of having the pump, in the boat and away from the water. But I, never having a I/O before. Don’t have a clue as to how it works. Outboard trim and tilt, use two solenoids or just reverse the polarity. But this one has one solenoid an a micro switch as well as a hydraulic line running to and out of where a shift cable hooks up. It looks like nothing more then a by pass of some kind. So if one of you guys know how this #$%$# thing works. Help an old guy out, and tell me, what all these parts do.

Not a job I really want to tackle long distance but the brand and model of jack plate might help. I have a Bob's Flats Jac I could compare it to.

Wait - I think I get it - you want use a Mercruiser pump to drive a Bob's jackplate, right?
You may need a dual direction pump, depending on the cylinder on the jackplate. You will need specs of both to ensure compatibility... It may be do-able, or maybe not...

As with all, a picture, part number or model Mercruser it came from would help. Parts breakdowns can be found at:
http://www.mercruiserparts.com/mercruiser_parts.asp
I had a '70s 165 (about 20years ago) that I have vague recollections of 3 wire system, one ground and one wire for in, the other for out.. The hoses alternately acted as pressure and return depending on motor direction with the "trim hold" being handled by a pilot valve and relief valve in the pump base.
Great idea, a few threads ago we cogitated the notion of one pump running the jack plate, trim tabs and power pole.. You now have a good start to that and the lead!

thanks for responding guys.
GF you got it. I don’t know if this jack plate is a bob’s or not, but its pretty simple. One line in the bottom of the cylinder and one at the top. So that’s not a problem. it’s the pump from the merc. that’s got me cussing it. Two hydraulic lines out the bottom of the pump. One went to one of the trim cylinders and the other to what looks like a valve of some sort. That has a shifter cable that moves a leaver. Out of that same valve I’ll call it. Is another hydraulic line that goes to the other trim cylinder. To me a pump is a pump is a pump, so to speak. If I know what everything did. I can make it work. Just knowing the working parts function will tell me what I need to do. So their is my problem. Knowing the function of any parts, makes life a little easier. Also I can't find any numbers on it. Its from around 1969. So that should give you some idea as to its age. Most of these pumps, need just a Polarity reversal to make them work. I know that is simplifying it but that is what most do.

A single line to each cylinder?

Ok I got it figured out. I made a mistake. That’s the problem with getting old. I thought I unhooked one line from each cylinder, but dburr it was two lines. So every thing can just be taken off the pump and two new line that will reach from inside the boat can go to the jack plate. The pump is what I thought. nothing more then reversing the polarity. See when you get old you forget and then make it more complex then it is. bwahahahaha thanks again guys. Some times you just need to pass a problem by a few others.
As for some one wanting to run everything off of one pump. You can do that, as long as the pump has the hydraulic pressure they all need. You need to get a little creative but it can be done. You would need two hydraulic manifolds with a bunch of solenoids and hydraulic switches to change from one unit to the other. That way you can keep your hydraulic lines short and use electric to switch from one unit to the other. It would be easy to diagram.

Last thing to check is the setting of the relief valve and that will take a little digging.. Would be a total pisser to find out the relief valve was week when you honk on the throttle and have the plate slam down..
Good luck!

Your right about that. But now that I know I don’t need, all of those other parts and it will work on the jack plate. I’ll take everything apart and clean and rebuild the pump, before I use it. That will still be a lot cheaper then another new pump. I can get new lines made at my local auto parts dealer. John makes lines up in the back of his store. I got him to make three new lines for the hydraulic system on my tractor, and they were much cheaper then new ones from the tractor supply store near me. When your retired, you have to save some where. Also having the pump in the boat and away from saltwater. Should make it last longer. Specially after I close in the transom on this boat. I hope to do that this winter.

Does the jack plate have solenoid valves or are they on the trim pump? Something has to hold it in place after you let go of the switch.

The solenoids are on the pump. But I’ll rewire them and put them in a box next to the pump, out of the weather to keep down the corrosion. Theirs alot of corrosion on them now. I've done that on a number of other pumps. Just trying to figure out what all those other parts were, was the problem.

Shall I take a pic of the pump that's on the Action Craft? Bob's, and the same pump as a Merc I/O. Same pump as the one for the 10" setback in my shop...
Your fine Walt! Run with it!!!
One suggestion. Take a pic of the pump, then re-wire all the leads between the pump and the solenoids. While you have it apart, pull the reservoir off the pump. clean it out, and force some air through the elbows to clean out all the crap in there...

Bob your right on the money with those suggestion. This pump works, but I’m sure with its age, their has got to be a lot of sludge in the reservoir. All the wiring connections have corrosion. So it has to be cleaned and rewired.

Well just to let you guys know, its working great. I made one change. The pump is ran by two solenoids instead of one. The instance on switches needed are cheaper then the switches used in the older system. They run12 gauge wire to the switch. So the switch had to handle the heavy current used by the pump motor. By using two solenoids. I can keep the #12 wire to the motor short and just use lighter wire to turn the solenoids on and off at the console, to switch the pumps polarity. I just used two of the old hoses to see if everything worked. Now all I have to do is get the new hoses, once the pump is installed on the boat, which will have to wait till I have the other motor ready to put on the boat, with the jack plate.
