Help identifying aquasport
« on: August 10, 2012, 09:35:08 PM »
I just picked this hull up pretty cheap for a project. I was told they thought it was a Mako. It was used at a marina as a service boat for many years. Mako guys said they thought it looked like a flatback aquasport. I think from seaching the site that its an early 70s 222. The hull has no marking that I have been able to find. I hope to make a nice center console out of it. Any ideas?

Welcome Vince,

My word friend....you have just purchased a 22-2 flatback Classic Aquasport :thumright:

Give us the transom hull numbers, we'll tell you about her.

You should be on cloud nine :bounce:

Welcome aboard fellow Carolinian.

Looks longer than a 22-2...  is it a 240 side console or something like that?

It measures 22'. Im starting to think it may be late 60s from all the pix and info I have found here. I cant find any hull ID anywhere and that seems to be the case for others from early 70s and before. The '66 brochure shows a pic from the rear of the boat. I noticed something in the pic that I noticed on mine when I got it that I thought looked strange. The inside rail turns up where it meets the transom. Any of the 70s pix I have found the lip on that rail meets the transom square. See the inside rail on the pic below and compare to the 66 brochure pic. Also, the platform in the front is solid. I know that may have been an option at that time but most of the 70s pix I have seen have storage bins doors in that platform floor. Unless there is some characteristic that someone knows of that can identify it by I guess I may never narrow it down past a 6-7 year time period.

Here is the page from the '66 Rudder. My eyes may be tired from all the reading, but it almost appears like the narrow inside vertical lip turns up where it meets the transom. Just seems like a strange design and it stuck out to me on mine.

It is preached that the search feature is your friend, and fellas here is a new member who has listened.

Vince, welcome, and here's the thinking:

You have purchased a sixties 22-2 flatback.....the interior has been heavily modified, yet nevertheless...she's a late sixties flatback Aquasport.

Not worth diddly in SC...not worth diddly in NC....but in Tampa, Fla....worth the big bucks.

Good deal.

The floor and transom "appear" to be solid, however the floor has humps that run the length of the boat. Is that from the foam expanding? I was hoping to get out without having to take it to the stringers to bring it back to life. Whats the first thing I need to look for and best spots to check? I have a feeling you are going to say pull the floor....

I noticed that most refurbs on here are going with closed transoms with brackets. We have three lakes up on this end of the state that mine will be on. Is the height of the transom fine for lake use of do I need to make some changes? There was also a floor height change discussed on here, does that apply to me?

Mine will be for more leisure/recreation use. This will be my first outboard also. I have swore off I/O after redoing several interior cuddys and have more engine probs than I care to deal with. My wife wants a pontoon but I dont like riding around on a porch while at the lake, so the next best thing is an open CC. The two crappy built consoles have to go so I am searching for a CC.

Congrats Mevince,

You got yourself a nice project 22 flatback. You're going to need to make some decisions about time and money. You have a boat worth restoring but the worth is going to be your personal satisfaction and the admiration of others who appreciate the classic hull. The boat will need a floor and transom at a minimum. The humps in the floor are more than likely the stringers trying to protrude through a sagging floor. The stringer foam is likely water saturated and the lower half of the transom will be wet and rotten. It's typical for a 45 year old Aquasport. There is a ton of information on this forum to help you decide which way to go. To me, the Cadillac do it yourself rebuild was done by Capt'n Matt down here in Florida, he built is flatback to make a living out of it and spared nothing. The entire rebuild was photographed and documented so take a look at what he did. From appearances, it looks like you have a nice hull to work with. All I can advise is immerse yourself in this forum. Read, research, relax and learn. Everyone will jump in to help if you pull the pin on this project...

Good luck,
Fitz

Well fellas Im afraid after doing a lot of reading last night that I will end with more time & money than I intended on when I picked it up. I love old vehicles & vessels enough to let them go to someone that will love them back to life rather than leaving it in a field saying "One day......". If you know of someone that is looking for one let me know. I wanna start a less needy project to have finished by next summer. Seems like a long time but Im also remodeling my house & have to travel often with work. Call or email me    864-723-5365 vincentaowens@yahoo.com

Vince, the 20 Potter Seacraft we discussed by phone this evening will be an ideal ride for you.

Your Flatback....she's a honey....and I'm pleased and appreciative to be the new owner of your late sixties Coburn and Sargent 22-2 Flatback :thumright:

She will stay right here on Classic Aquasport. I appreciate the opportunity to own her, and she will be treated as the lady that she is.

New members, Vince did his homework, way before he joined. He was knowledgeable and informed. Our bud and moderator Captain Bob ain't bumping his gums when he says "The search feature is your friend."

Vince, you are a fellow Carolinian, and a gentleman. Please plan to attend the Octoberfest Aquasport Reunion in Southport, NC the weekend of October 12th.

Thanks :thumright:
