starting another
« on: August 06, 2012, 09:08:34 AM »
Well guys I’m starting a new project boat. Like a few others, not an aquasport but a classic. it’s a 1969 Cruiser incorporated. I’m pulling a six cylinder I/O and putting on a bracket. With a outboard. Here’s one pic of what it looks like. I’ve had the boat for a while. I also have added the top. Then stopped on it for a while. I now have more time to spend on it.

They made some really nice lapstrake wooden boats in the 50's and 60's. I really didn't know they made that many fiberglass boats.

Yea fitz I was told, they and Grady white where together at that time. I don’t know it they were, but she is built pretty good. I got her from a friend, who was dying from cancer. He was afraid she would be hulled to the junk yard. So he asked if I would take her and fix her up, if he gave her to me. I told him yes and thought know more about it. A month later, coming back from my daughter house. I pulled into my drive way and their she sat. So I’m redoing her and giving her to my daughter , son in law and my grand babies. I want them to get to love the old classics as well.

I really miss my friend. I enjoyed our talks. And I’m sure, he would approve of what, I’m going to do with her. But I’ll tell you, I just finished pulling the motor and out drive. And my old butt is tired. Here are a few more pic’s. Oh I fore got. she sat in a barn for 20 years. Before she end up in my drive way.

the old out drive

and the old motor

and a few of the boat and what I'm going to have to deal with. I really like the flare on her.

And in the end. I'll enjoy, watching my grand babies have fun on her. And really thats the most important part of doing this boat.

Well guys I had a little more time to spend on this boat.  All so like I said its not an aquasport. So if you guys would rather not have a boat that’s not a aquasport let me know. And I won’t post any more on this boat. Just thought I would ask, before going to far. As you all know, I love my Aquasports. But right now back to what I found. I was pleasantly surprised, when I got the last couple of pieces off. The transom is 21/4 inches thick and no rot. I thought sure with a boat this old, their would be some, at the bottom of where the gimble mount came through the hull. But no solid as a rock. And the other point is, how clean the cut out was for the out drive. I have seen some that were really butchered. So this one will be easy to work with. Here’s a few pic’s.

These two, show the bottom of the cut. Look how dry.

I think how good this transom is, is a testament to the work those older builds did.

Looks like you have a solid hull to start off with there!  I think it's pretty cool looking too!

Yea  wing I like how she looks to. A number of the older classics had really good lines. I think my grand babies will really like her when she’s finished. Going to order the bracket next. I’m getting it built from a fabricator, over in Maryland near Crisfield. He’s been building them for a long time for the commercial crabbers in that area. Does good work. And his prices are reasonable. :thumleft:

Thanks Rick I will. Next I have to clean out the bilge. Good grease cuting suds and water, should do. Then I what to even out the cut out in just a few places. Then I’ll start milling out the transom on both sides, to do the filling.

Bob you may want to move this thread to “other classic rebuilds.

Well its been a while since I posted on this boat  . But I’m back to work on her . Finished the transom, added the bracket and mounted the motor. Also installed a helm, really a big unit, but need to cut a hole in the transom for the cable to get to the motor. Would have loved to put a hydraulic helm on, but since I’m funding this boat my self. I picked up a Teleflex helm with a 20 foot cable and a sst steering wheel for a really good price. It came out of a 25 C'hawk that had a 200 marc on it. It came from the factory that way. So I know the helm will handle the little 175, I put on. I’m just no sure how I want to cut the hole yet. Soooooo I’m at a stand still till I think about it for a while.

Hey Salt, good to see you back at it again.
So you skipped a couple steps in the pix I think.  I assume you covered the hole in the transom, plugged it, or both or something other than covering it with the bracket
End result looks good though  :salut:

Yea Rick I used a router to cut out more of the transom , both inside and out. I went in ½ inch and out six inches beyond the old cut out. Then cut ply wood to fit. Then on the inside I added another ½ inch over the whole inside. I also added knee braces, then gel coated the whole back end. The transom is now 2 ½ inches thick.  It should be more then stronger enough for the bracket and motor. I also gel coated the bracket, before I installed it. While I’m thinking about the cut out for the cable. I’m making a instrument panel for it and will do the wiring. My grand children are asking me when will it be done. They what to use it. I laugh and just say soon.

Mighty nice looking Walt!  What are you going to do with the old IO motor? Was that a 250 GM block?

Dave its an in line 6 and beleive it is the 250. Right now its just sitting their. I will most likelly scrap it. The head is like new and their are a number of good parts on it, but it was really hard to turn over. I took out the plugs and tried a second time but it was stillhard to move. So I just don't want to full with it. If any one wants it they can have it. But it is missing the fly wheel. Igave it to a friend. The other thing is, I'm not to close to most.  :o
