Woodpeckers...PITA!
« on: July 29, 2012, 08:09:04 PM »
Tear up :*: digging for bugs, rat-a-tat on the corner of the house, scare all the birds away from the feeders when they dive bomb...

Got the old Crosman 760, have been taking them out regularly, but this one kinda took the cake...

Nailed him and he just kinda fell back, claw trapped in the conduit where he was pecking.  He'll stay there for a while.  Hope his little buddy's get the message...

Now Bryan, I don't kill anything that doesn't warrant it.  But when the Admiral speaks...well, you know the deal...

I guess I would not advertise it on the internet.

Here is a list of federally protected woodpeckers.  I know for a fact that the FWC, National Wildlife Service, and NOAA fisheries monitor Florida Sportsman Forum for wildlife violations and do prosecute and win on internet postings.  Are they on here?  Who knows but it only takes one bleeding heart to make a phone call.
I tried to post the entire bird list but the forum would not let me.

    Woodpecker:
    Acorn, Melanerpes formicivorus
    Black-backed, Picoides arcticus
    Downy, Picoides pubescens
    Gila, Melanerpes uropygialis
    Golden-fronted, Melanerpes aurifrons
    Hairy, Picoides villosus
    Ivory-billed, Campephilus principalis
    Ladder-backed, Picoides scalaris
    Lewis', Melanerpes lewis
    Nuttall's, Picoides nuttallii
    Pileated, Dryocopus pileatus
    Puerto Rican, Melanerpes portoricensis
    Red-bellied, Melanerpes carolinus
    Red-cockaded, Picoides borealis
    Red-headed, Melanerpes erythrocephalus
    Strickland's, Picoides stricklandi
    Three-toed, Picoides tridactylus
    White-headed, Picoides albolarvatus

More than likely, this is what you shot.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-headed_Woodpecker

We have them in fair numbers up here and one is frowned upon by FWC for harassment of same.

Is this harassment?
Who am I to say? :|

Having examined this photograph forensically, here is a deductive series of events:

1. The bird was making noise

2. Bob got out his Crosman 760

3. Bob pumped it up A LOT for maximum noise, shock, and awe

4. Bob aimed for the pole near the bird

5. He pulled the trigger

6. The BB impacted the pole, scaring the birdchit out of the bird

7. The bird hopped on the electric wire, and was electricfried

8. He fell towards the ground, but the little toe on the right foot became inexplicably entangled in the apparatus

Bob, sorry for your loss, best to you sir.

Maggie and I are in mourning...alas, the poor SOB...I mean sweet avian friend! Got my words mixed up there...

Kind of odd, if they are so "threatened", why do we have a GAZILLION around here?  Is effin Weeki Wachee where they have decided to lay claim to, as a last vestige?

Take a look at this pic of the "nest" they pecked in our palm in front...

So like is FWC going to pay us for that tree?  The "nest" is 7" in to the trunk, 6" wide inside the trunk, and 10" deep...I've measured it.

So, since they basically gutted the inside of our tree, it has now become their moseleum.  Currently 5 of their relatives in there, resting in peace...or is that pieces?
