'66 C&S 22-2, Got her in the water!

After a 2000 mile round trip (in 3 days!) to get her home and a week of screwing around with the motor to get her running right, I finally got her in the water! Everything went good, except the fact that she is a little heavy because of water-logged foam, but I couldn't be more pleased with the performance and handling. I was kind of worried, because I bought her sight unseen, that I was going to have to do a complete rebuild to make her seaworthy. Even though a rebuild is in order, she will work just fine for the rest of this year.

With the good old Black Max 150 and a 19" pitch prop and three people she cruised @ 28.7 GPS/3800 rpm, and W.O.T. @ 39.4 GPS/550 rpm.

Looks great!  Those are some pretty good cruise and WOT speeds your getting with a 150.  These boats are not built for speed and your not going to go much faster than that with more power.  It would be interesting to see how much water is in the foam.

Thanks guys! I was surprised by the numbers too, I would have provided pictures of the GPS numbers, but I couldn't figure out how to take a picture of the phone when using the phone to get the numbers   . As far as the water goes, I'm really thinking quite a bit, but I drain a lot too during the past week. We will most likely see for sure over the winter if all goes to plan.

Wow, 1966 the year before the "Summer of Love". And a diver! Really sweet ride. It is cool to see how slick the water is right behind the transom. I have one question, did yall actually tow it back 1000 miles on those tires?  If the answer is yes...... Dayuuuummmm!

Long story that maybe I'll tell over a few beers someday, but the short answer is YES! And NO, I can't believe they made it, I was sure I would loose one or two due to overheating. I was short on time and couldn't find hubs, wheels and tires of an appropriate size, but they are load range C, so I said sold! I bought 2 spares though...

Anyone want to buy six pontoon boat trailer tires and four hubs? They have less that 1100 miles on them and they are only a week old today!

looks just like my 67 diver, I was under assumption 67 was the first of this model, apparently I was not informed correctly.

Was this some sort of precursor company to aquasport?

Exactly. Coburn and Sargent, C & S.  One bought out the other, and Aquasport was founded.

Cal, you sir own the only C & S example that we are aware of.

It is also the oldest documented hull here at Classic Aquasport.

Congratulations. You should be justifiably proud, and we welcome you to our membership.

Please keep us apprised. So many new members come aboard, and for various reasons, fade away. Your boat, and her valued history...we hope that you and she will be active here for many years to come.

Oldskool, your ride is every bit as sweet. Prior to the C & S, your hull was the oldest documented. Exactly the same hull....flatback diver. And just as rare and valuable. We hope that you will hang right here as well, and keep posting

Scott, I have every intention of staying active on this board, and I will involve you guys every step of the way. I would love to and plan to attend in a year or two, I just need to give her some attention first (I'll start a thread in the rebuild section when that time comes). It will give me a good excuse to visit my Sister-in-Law in Charleston.

Anyway, the next big hurtle is done, she has Michigan numbers on her as of today. Tomorrow is a fishing day! Do you think Coburn & Sargent intended for anyone to go Bass fishing out of these... The oldest boy is the boss (he's standing behind me) and he said we are going Bass fishing, so it is done.

Aquasport boats have a rich history that dates back to the 1950's. Partners Fred Coburn and Lennox Sargent formed a company called C&S boats and through that company they designed and built wooden center console boats that they hoped would appeal to the ski boat market niche. The boats were based on a center console known as the Scop Cruiser which was designed by Fred Scopinich. Scopinich designed and built the first Aquasport prototype which was an all wood center console with a modified vee hull, powered by an outboard engine and built on a per-order basis.

Aquasport unveiled it's first fiberglass boat in the mid 60's to great success. It was around that time that Coburn purchased Sargent's interest in the company and became sole owner. In 1967 the name was officially changed from C&S Boats to Aquasport. In the late 60s introduced the 19-1 (a slightly smaller version of the popular 22-2) and added it to the range of offerings.

Designer Walt Walters, a well known offshore racer, joined forces with Aquasport to enhance the designs of their boats. By 1976, every Aquasport offered was a Walt Walters designed, modified vee center console. In 1974 two models, the 22 foot and also a 24 foot Sea Hunter were introduced with inboard engines. Also in the mid 70's they began offerings models with enclosed berths and seperate heads which were referred to as "Family Fisherman" models.

Congrats on the cool old ride, I have a friend that has what I thought was an early 22 flatback but it is laid out a little different than my 69 or any other one I have seen. Maybe its a C&S too, do you have pictures of the casting platform layout. You still have the twin under console fuel tank set up?
