Just got back home, today Weeki Wachee Springs was over-flowing, can't remember it being that busy. They must have had something "special" going on. Usually on the weekends the lot gets about 1/2 full. Fernando will be by in a bit with his buddy Andy to go grab some scallops. I'm sure he'll give a report this evening...

I believe the marquee read, "65th Annual Mermaid Reunion".

That could be ugly...80 year old mermaids out there...
LOL!  That was my thought as I read it on the way to the ramp last weekend.

Betcha a nickel the 2012 Mermaids were in attendance. Were there any pickup trucks with mud bogs, dog boxes, dual exhaust and a 15 foot CB antennae with three nasty yellow tennis balls and a rebel flag (flags)?

No Scott, they were 20 miles up the road...after you pass through "the wilderness"...and end up in Homosassa...

Weeki Wachee is basically Spring Hill...established by Brooklynites, Bronx dwellers, Long Islanders...

Sometimes, in Publix, you swear you are in NYC...

Good. Nice folk, and hopefully they understand that no one is trying to steal from them anymore.

Enough chit-chat...your kin are still hungry up here.

Do Floridian fish mongers take food stamps for scallops?  Will send an address.

Thanks.

Scotty, not that it's the same, but don't your local grocery stores have bay scallops in the seafood section?  Most of the commercial supply comes out of Appalachicola.  My Publix in Spring Hill had them yesterday for $11/lb.  Sea scallops were $20/lb...

If she's still alive, I'd bet she was there.

The book she's holding is her scrapbook full of black and white photos of her days underwater.

I go by that place everyday, have never even given it a second thought...

When I was a kid growing up in Chicago, we would pile in the car and come down to FL to visit my grandparents, one set in Bradenton (Bayshore Gardens), the other set in Lauderdale.  Pick up I-80 south of the city, then east over to I-65 in Indiana.  Just after you got on 65, there was a billboard for Weeki Wachee Springs...like, what, 1100 miles south?  I always laughed at that billboard!!!

And now I live 10 minutes from it.  Go figure!

I've lived here all my life and have only driven by. Never been inside.

The woman in the photo was at the navy divers display at the Jax. Naval Station air show. We started talking with her and she broke out her scrapbook. I just could not walk away without a photo of a Florida icon with my family.

Back in the sixties....our vacation destination was Weeki-Wachee. To see the mermaids.

Grew up right here...Wilmington, NC. Maybe dad liked mermaids?

Anyhow...he had a 1965 Chevy Biscayne...it wasn't an Impala, he always went middle of the road.

In the back, he made a plywood bench that straddled the hump....momma would put blankets on it, made it into a big bed...when you are a kid, it was a big bed.....and off to Florida we went on 95, cigarettes a blazin'.

We always spent the first night at the Holiday Inn at Ocala. They had a deep pool, with a deluxe diving board. Then to Silver Springs, for the glass-bottom boats. Then to Cypress Gardens. Then to see the mermaids in Weeki-Wachee.

Man....those were the days for a kid from Carolina.... Going to FLORIDA :thumright:

Scallops:

Not interested in Costco scallops. Requesting your local scallops. Can someone send some?  Thanks.

Looking to put up a good mess of scallops for the winter.

Will pay as you say, much appreciated, and thanks!

If I had more than three small bags in the freezer I would send you some.  If I do a trip later this year and do well.  I will send you a bag or two.  I am just not sure how to ship them to you.

They ARE melt in your mouth yummy!!!  Problem is, you'd have to go a few times a week for a few weeks to get a really serious quantity...

Yeah Scott, we did the Cypress Gardens deal, then, later, when I was a young adult living in Orlando, we dragged my buddy's Nautique up to SR 40 in the forest, put in the Silver River, and went into the park by boat...fell in right behind the glass bottom boats!  Water was awesome in that river, clear as a bell, and the monkeys lining the shoreline...

Just never did the Weeki Wachee deal...
