787 Dreamliner Performs at Air Show
« on: July 17, 2012, 05:42:44 PM »
This is the first time a commercial jet has performed at an Air Show in over 20 years.  Check out the almost vertical takeoff.  Way cool

P.S. All the Quality plainly seen in this aircraft was inspected, tested and approved by yours truly ;)  ... Well, maybe not all of it

That is a beautiful aircraft!  The wing is graceful and stunning and I'm sure the aerodynamics of it are light years ahead of anything.  it just looks... well RIGHT!   The high performance takeoff is incredible...  all I was thinking is OMG accelerated stall...  but I'm sure the computers won't allow that to happen.  If they pulled a "Tex Johnson" that would have been the icing on the cake!

Bruce, bet there are sensors that determine air pressure on the upper and lower wing surfaces that can determine stall conditions...and correct the attitude of the plane before stall conditions can occur.

Hell, my Dad used to do vertical climbs in F-101s back in the day.  Lot's of thrust helps!!!

Saw that on the news the other night, really cool  :D
Growing up over here seemed like Boeing was in the news every night.
Made us all proud of having them here
But how things change in 40 years  :(

I just hope you all down there appreciate  Boeing :thumright:

Yes, the 787 is very impressive for what it is.  Truly a cutting edge aircraft.  JAL (1st recipient of the 787) has reported fuel savings of almost 25%, and that's where this plane really shines.  The cool looking maneuvers are made possible as just a side effect of the overall ultra-efficient design.

Bob- you're on the money about how the anti-stall system works.  The test 787s were put through over 300 different stall scenarios, but the anti-stall had be put on over-ride (not so easy on an Airbus).  The take-off in the video was with the Ant-Stall system active.

Bill- I'm very happy to have Boeing here in SC.  It's one of the best things that ever happened to this state, even if it is just another case of the North carpet-bagging the South.  The pay is good, but we're not getting paid like Everett employees, that's for sure.  The opportunities are great, and the benefits are even better.  Boeing is paying for 100% of my Bachelors degree  Besides, I was unemployed prior to being hired by Boeing (I think that was one of their pre-requisites) so I can't really complain at all.

Scott- thanks for the warm wishes :)  Fletch will be the favorite Newly-Wed soon.  Being Married is much better than planning to be married ;)

Cool vid, but did they have to turn off the fly-by-wire limts to do that?  Most fly-by-wire systems today limit turns to a 45 degree bank.  That flight was WAY beyond 45 - there were some 60-75 degree turns there - that's 2-3 g by they way...  It would not have been comfortable for passengers, but I doubt if there were any passengers on that flight!

There's an old saying in aviation:  "if she looks good, she'll fly good."  I think the 87 meets both.  Way to go Boeing!  :salut:

The fly-by-wire banking limits on the 787 are customizable, so I'd imagine the pilot (Mike Carriker) upped the limits for the show.
