HELP! - fuel sender issue found..... :(
« on: July 14, 2012, 10:10:13 PM »
So, i installed my new yamaha speedo gauge only to find out the gas gauge wasnt reading anything, just blinked 1 bar

after i took off the cap, i saw this!

Connections are corroded and loose...   I believe this is the #7 pink wire that connects to the white wire on the speedo.....

anyone know the part number to replace this?
also is it as easy as removing those screws and lifting this out in an angle???

I did see this but no idea how long a sender is needed: http://www.amazon.com/Moeller-Marine-Electric-Universal-Sending/dp/B000MTCRAA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1342318790&sr=8-1&keywords=fuel+sending+unit+yamaha

thanks

That thing looks like a science project

Rip that nasty gone.

Replace it.... done and done.

Take a steel brush to the rest of it, pour on some baking soda too....Give it some TLC :thumright:

Wow...

I would also be looking at the pick-up as well.  You can see it in the upper portion of the pic.  Think it would be a good time to replace that as well... :thumright:  :thumright:

Lots of PB blaster on the screws.... You are lucky that the rest of the sender flange is still there or else the whole thing would just pop off. The gasket looks like it is holding things together by force of habit.  Getting the screws out without ruining the tank side threads is going to be a challenge, BUT! Better to have to drill some new holes than spend 6 months in a burn unit cause heat was considered a good idea...

Good luck!

The red and green are connected to the fuel sender... When you put an ohm meter across those posts with the wires disconnected you should see somewhere between 30 and 200 ohms resistance.  It would be an absolute miracle to see anything with the terminals as nasty as they are.  My vote (if I have one?) would be to get a sender coming from an outfit like Amazon that will fit a tank that is from 4 to l2 inches deep.. My apologies that I don't know the tank depth.. Maybe good question for the post?  Once the sender shows up then you can go to work getting the old one out.  If you don't want to take a chance on the wrong sender then you can always take the old one out, make a template of the hole in the tank and the hole pattern for the screws.  Then fab up a cover plate till you get a sender the correct size.  Dont leave the red wire hanging, insulate the ring terminal AND disconnect it from your brand new meter, the old belt and suspenders approach..

All that said, shut the power off and ring out the wires to make sure they are all still good and for hevans sake make SURE you have the power, sender and ground wires correct on the guage.  Two weeks ago I spent 45 minutes ringing stuff out, pulling the sender etc and watching a brand new analog guage hit the max pin before my lovely wife strolls up and asks "are you sure you hooked it up right"???  After almost 30 years, I knew the only correct answer was "I'll check again"..  I had the ground and the sender backwards, funny what haste, age, upside down installation and no glasses will do..

if it helps the question, looks like it has a Moeller fuel tank model FT 9902

i saw this on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/WELLCRAFT-020-0360-MOELLER-FT9902-CROSSLINK-POLY-99-GAL-BOAT-FUEL-GAS-TANK-/200758388186

same tank model number and states: 55" W x 29" D x 15" H

so the sender i think needs to be 14" (1" from the bottom)?

which would mean this sender would work: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000MTCRAA/ref=s9_simh_co_p263_d0_g200_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=left-1&pf_rd_r=0B17FN8BCG2JTDAWMVV6&pf_rd_t=3201&pf_rd_p=1280661682&pf_rd_i=typ01  ??

Instead of guessing, my thought would be to remove the existing sender and know for sure before you order.

Is there some reason not to?

Also keep this in mind about fuel gauges themselves.  They work on resistance, but are still electric gauges, so they need 12V power.  DO NOT hook the sender lead (pink) up to the "I" post on the gauge, at it will fry the sender NOW!  There is an "S" post, that's where it goes...

I know we're talking senders here, but just a word of advice...

I am using the Yamaha OEM gauge, which its white wire connects to #7 wire, which per a chart, is the fuel sender...

On Yams, the white wire is indeed the fuel sender off either the multi-function gauge or the separate fuel gauge.  That white wire gets butt spliced to the pink coming out of the boat's main accessory harness.

WEMA senders have white and black wires coming out of the solid state module on top of the sender.  Same deal there, white to pink...

I really can't argue with that. If I knew anything about that model I would offer suggestions.

Personally, I would want to know what was in that tank but that's just my thoughts.

Good luck.

Please let us know how it turns out. It's going to be a bear to get the old sender screws out with out damaging the tank. As seabob stated the fuel pick up needs to be changed also. I wouldn't be suprised at all if the hose nipple breaks off with just using hand pressure. They are prone to break easily when they look like the one in the picture.

Please change everything...!! It will save you in the long run and could save your life..!!

Use a WEMA sender when you replace it.

Do you have anyone trustworthy near the boat that would go by every day or 2 and give it a shot of BP Blaster or something like it? If so you might want to do that for a week or so letting it soak good....My last tank had a "universal" sending unit in it, just took a few times getting the lenght right....Definatly a little TLC will be needed as well as patience..
