Aquasport 246 on E Bay...Purchased by a new member
« on: July 13, 2012, 11:13:24 PM »
Guys, this post appeared a few days back on classifieds. Captain John brought it to our attention, a 246 with twins in good shape. Rick commented, CJ recommended, all urged someone to purchase.

We now have a buyer, a new owner.... and as of last night, a NEW member here :thumright:

Welcome new member

Hey guys,

Thanks for the interest.  I saw the other moved posts in the "introduce yourself" thread, but for ongoing conversation while I get the boat delivered this weekend and inspect it myself next weekend, I wonder if it wouldnt' be better to prioritize this thread?  I'll leave it up to the mods to decide.  FYI - I just finished uploading the ebay advertisement photos to my member gallery if anyone wants to refresh their memory.  Here's the overall pic below.  I'm encouraged about the condition of the stringers/deck/foam for a couple of reasons.  The scupper and accent striping are still above waterline even though the transom is saddled with twins, and all the topside fittings are original which means very few holes have been drilled in the deck. I'd think soaked foam would have her sitting a bit lower in the water, but those of you who've verified waterlogged boats would know better.

Btw - Seller is charging $450 (includes mileage and tolls) to deliver from NYC to my family's property in the central Connecticut shoreline tomorrow.  Sound reasonable?

.55 per mile round trip allowed IRS reimbursement, but time, wear and tear etc and worst of all having to drive around the metro/5 bouroghs area during the summer? That amount sounds good to me, but then again a traffic jam to me is getting stuck behind a hay wagon, or a rubbernecking rusticator...

Ry, that is a good looking ride, at a great price. Congratulations!

The $450 is fair.

Based upon prior dealings with my hauler, I'm thinking $1500 to get it from Conn to SoFla. Could be less, gas is down.

Shoot me a PM if you like when you're ready.

Forget the way the transom looks now. That's gonna change....except for the twin girls.

Agree with your assessment on the waterline..,she ain't hurt for now.

Thanks guys - I'm still cautious, but extremely optimistic.  I'll get to see her in a week and find out for sure how well I did; fingers, toes, eyes all crossed.  I just couldn't get over the condition.  The morse console controls were still shiny and show no sign of pitting or corrosion - heck, the knobs are still clearly red and black instead of gray from UV like you'd expect!  The console windshield is still clear, the dash looks original, the teak FAR from destroyed, the gelcoat still has gloss to it...I could go on and on.  In case you missed my original posts, I'm actually even excited about the old OMC's.  I have rebuilt several of these exact engines, have one on my wellcraft currently, and even have enough spare parts to build another one from scratch.  Even if both of these engines are BEAT UP (which I doubt), I can still get them running again for pennies compared to repowering, and that would provide extra $$ for cosmetic restoration to help make it look even nicer.  My short term goal is to restore as much as I reasonably can to factory condition.  Long term I may repower or modify some minor elements once I find her shortcomings.  She does need a few more rod holders though (still debating whether to drill gunwales, weld to tower, buy clamp ons, etc.)   Also, I'm a pretty avid diver and she doesn't seem very access friendly for climbing out of the water.  Anyone have any suggestions for the best ladder/platform solution for this hull?  For the restoration, does anyone have a 246FF with the original (or a properly reproduced) bench seat in the transom they can photograph and measure for me?? Lastly, any 246 owners who want to relay any hard earned words of wisdom?  Please forgive the pile of questions...
