Help a friend in Cocoa?
« on: July 11, 2012, 04:55:14 PM »
Anybody know someone who can help a friend of mine out?  He's stuck in Cocoa on a 40' Mainship trawler with a broken water pump and stop solenoid that won't work either.  He's having problems getting help/parts/repairs.

His name is John Winter and the boat is "Just Relax" - their trip site is:   http://www.mytripjournal.com/JustRelax

Any help would be appreciated!

John,
Is the water pump the engine mounted one?  Gas or diesel?  Twins?  Access?  Stop solenoid should be a simple swap out...

More info...Cocoa's a stones throw from many a port, Daytona/New Smyrna, Port Canaveral, Sabastian, Vero, Ft. Pierce, St. Lucie...so what's the problem getting her serviced?  Backlog?  Moolah?

John,
Assuming it's the intake pump on one of the mains, the swap can be done in water, just have to close the shut-off valve at the pickup.  So the boat doesn't have to be on the hard...

Here's the message I got this morning:

There is supposed to be a guy coming by today. We'll see. It is single engine, Yanmar diesel. I have replaced the water pump before myself, but for some reason, it is stuck and I do not want to break anything getting it loose. I need a special puller that the mechanic has. I am going to buy one of them, when I see it. Pump is located right next to the engine and is gear driven. The heat exchanger keeps a standard puller from working. I understand there is a special one made just for this application. If he does not show, I'll take you up on your offer. Yanmar 370 HP - 2006.

Any ideas guys?

Just talked with John on the phone - the mechanic showed up and is finishing up now.  The guy has the special puller for the Yanmar impeller and is going to sell it to John so he can fix it himself next time...

He said "how did you hook up with those guys to help out?"  I told him about the Classic Aquasport website, and he said "wow, so these guys just help each other out wherever they are?  I've got to check that site out!"

So thanks to Pete and Bob for your willingness to help out a fellow boater in need, and for reinforcing the spirit of this fine group of people on the Classic Aquasport site.   :thumleft:

We are an odd lot here.  Don't play by the THT/CW/whatever rules, where every third thread turns into a pissing match...we just try to help.

Just something different about AS owners and those associated with them.  Probably out-gassing in some special resin or whatever...

Glad all worked out for your buddy, John!

GoneFission, I emailed you back yesterday but from the looks of it, he got it all figured out. Wish I could've caught the thread a little sooner and maybe saved him a mechanics bill but hey.....at least he's back up and running. Give your friend my email address. That way, if he has any other issues in the future, he can email me directly and maybe get his question answered without it having it cost him anything. Free is a good price. I don't live that far from cocoa either if he needs some help. I'm always up for giving someone a hand. Glad to hear it all worked out. Good job to all who contributed!!

Aaron
