HEY I recognize that switch panel, my shop made it for Eugene awhile back. He showed us pictures of this boat on his phone last time he was here. Looks great!

Sorry for the delay in posting. We have been scalloping in Homosassa. From the pictures that Greg has been sending, it appears as though he's getting some good use out of the boat rustling up some tarpon. Bow to the silver king.



Greg was one of those ideal clients who had great ideas about what he wanted out of a functional fishing rig, yet was still open to ideas and suggestions regarding the practical application and cost constraints of the wish list. The boat runs and performs according to the parameters that he articulated and came out really well. It was rebuilt without using wood, but rather Nidacore and Coosa for the floors and transom. It came in at 2,040 lbs hull weight prior to rigging the console, bracket and tower. This was 40 lbs heavier than we had anticipated but still within 2% of 2,000 lb. target weight for which we were shooting. This included the 2 additional layers of 1708 that we sheathed the entire hull and sides with prior to glassing in the new stringers. There were 2 overlapping 1708s that glassed in the box stringers extending all the way to the chines. As time allows, I can post detailed step by step rebuild pictures with brief descriptions that may benefit folks on future rebuilds. Some of the tips and tricks will hopefully save folks time and money on future rebuilds.

Bob, I'm not sure I understand the question. I only know of one way to mount a clamshell pickup through the hull.

What are the four devices surrounding the 90 degree bends?
From the pics they appear to be lock nuts to me but I could be wrong. What do they do?

One piece clamshells pickups have one threaded bronze inlet (3/4" in this case) and 4 smaller countersunk holes for bolts (#10 flats w/ nylocks nuts in this case) to keep the clamshell from rotating. We go straight from the pickup to a 90 elbow, to ball valve, to strainer, to pump. Going directly from the pickup to the 90 mitigates the potential for airlock that can occur when the ball valve, strainer, and pump are stacked directly atop the pickup. There are only 2-3" of vertical lift to overcome w/ the 90 where you have treble or fourfold the vertical lift when stacking directly atop the pickup.

Correct.

Same as installed by the quality builders here. Internally, everything is parallel to the hull bottom, as low in the bilge as possible.

There is a link on the Miss Delmarva rebuild thread to the Onslow Bay build post on THT. Their raw water intake install is exactly as shown above.


Biggest reason boat owners switch over from Rule-style livewell pumps to expensive, high amperage draw, low flow diaphragm pumps....airlock issues.

A proper install prevents the problem.

Very similar. We use Groco pickups, but they are functionally the same as the Perko ones.

You are absolutely right Scott, airlock is a common issue with livewells. So many folks assume that the pump is the issue when in reality it is the vertical lift that is the real issue. The 90 is the easiest way to address this issue.
